Rebuild wlk file?
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:33:26 PM »
I seem to remember being able to do this some time back but can't for the life of me remember or find out how.

I noticed while importing them into WD that I had a few that ran short and confirmed it by the small file size. Any tips?

One of the members here developed the WLK Reader/Writer Application:

Maybe that's what your remembering?

Thanks for the link but no - that wasn't it. That's much more involved than what I'm thinking. This was something easy that even a dummy like me could do before his morning coffee.

Are you remembering the built-in conversion option in WL (Import Database Files) to convert from the pre-5.2 wlk file format to the 5.2 and newer format?

There really is not a way to "rebuild" a WLK file from WeatherLink since that is where all of the data is actually stored.  WeatherLink does not have a capability to import/insert records from any text based source, that is why I had to write the application mentioned above.

And I've been giving that a good workout but lost most of my time by using an older version that I had stored.  ](*,)

What I've been doing is exporting to *.txt from the 'browse' function of WLink and doing a 'bulk import' then creating a *.wlk with the utility. That's the correct way to use it, no?

After I do that, I reload that new wlk into the app for viewing and while all the data seems to be good, Weather Display has a problem importing the wlk file cleanly.

FWIW - that may have been with the older version I was using. I've since reinstalled WD to start from scratch with the whole WD & Ajax combo. Too many copies of too many things started to get me lost.

A lot of my problems seem to be centered around a period when I went thru an ISS failure and other goofy stuff last year or a dropped reading (like 'inside temp') here and there. Or at least that's what I notice in the 'browse' of WLink.

All I wanted to do was import my station's history into WD but it really seems like a major PITA!

So - the 'browse' function in WLink is actually just viewing all the wlk files at once?

Yes, the "Browse" function is just looking at the WLK files.  If you have any specific errors when trying to import the rebuilt files into WD, let me know and I will attempt to take a look at the problem.  Can you import those same files into WeatherLink?

You know you can double click on a row of data in the Browse function to have a data editing window with that row's data in it pop up. It is a tedious way to correct a long running sequence of errors in the wlk file, but it works fine for a few successive errors.

The browse works for editing and deleting records , but for some reason Davis did not add the functionality to insert a record.  That is the whole reason I wrote the WLKReaderWriter application.

I've used the "browse" in the past to edit/delete some of those -64* windchils and other bogus rain numbers that popped up with a bad sensor.

jruys - I'm skittish about importing into WLink at this point. When/if the rebuilt wlk imports cleanly into WD, I'll replace the wlk for WLink.

I've been playing with one short wlk that ran with 120 minute arcints for the month. At first, it would quit during WD import at the start but I've got the few first records to import now. Something keeps stopping it. It shows clean in the wlk writer with correct record numbers, intervals, etc. That one I might take you up on your "look at it" offer.

Let me ask you this - is it feasible to txt export the WLink month in question, copy& paste records in a standard editor and then run the wlk writer bulk import on it?

What I'm getting at is I have one month (with 10 min arcints) that's a nitemare (bad/ dashed out data) and it seems easier to just cut out the bad day or two and replicate (copy&paste) with a "known good" section and adjusting the date/time. I know the data as far as sensor readings would be skewed but that's easy to fix later.

You definitely could export out the records to a text file and edit them, just make sure you use the same delimiters in between data columns, if you export from WeatherLink, it should be a tab.

You don't really have to "import" the wlk file into WeatherLink, all you do is put it into the folder with the other WLK files.  So, if you want to test the file that was created without messing up the original file, all you have to do is copy the original file to some other folder during testing.  You should make a backup of all of these files onto an external hard drive or some free storage website like http://skydrive.live.com.  That way if you have a harddrive failure you will not lose all of your data.

If the file does works in WeatherLink and not in WD I am not sure if I can do anything about it, but if it does not work in WeatherLink, I need to figure out what is wrong.  Feel free to email me the text you imported and the wlk file you created to the email address listed on the developer tab of the WLKReaderWriter app and I can take a look at it.

jruys - I think your software is what I need to create a false year of data (I'll be importing two temperature readings on each day, normal high & normal low) which I will use to create normal high and normal low data to overlay on actual data while graphing.

Here's the problem with trying to download the software or view your home page:

Try the link again, my web hosting company has been having issues with the unauthorized error that seems to go away after a couple of minutes.  Trust me, I am not happy with them for the past couple of months, but it is getting a little better.
