Tropo rain gauge - where can i buy in Europe?
« on: January 18, 2025, 12:00:54 PM »
Hi,

I want to give myself a gift this year and buy a TROPO rain gauge. The only problem is that I can't buy it anywhere.

Amazon.de and amazon.com do not deliver to Poland, Prodata does not ship outside the UK.

The question is, do you know a store in Europe where I can buy this rain gauge?

Take my money and sell me this product

Did you ask Prodata if they will ship to Poland? Send an email to sales@weatherstations.co.uk.   Their website states they typically ship to the UK, but need to request if shipping outside the UK. The owner, John Dunn posts regularly in this Forum (Johnd is his member name). Send him a note.

Yes, I know that John contributes significantly here on the forum.

Ok, you're probably right. I'll write to him.

Hello, Tye here from Climalytic Instruments.

I wanted to chime in and say that we ship our products internationally from our store at: https://store.climalytic.com. You can get a live shipping quote once you add a product to your cart. We use DHL for our international shipping partner and have found them to be reliable, fast and competitively priced.

Prodata (https://www.weatherstations.co.uk/precipitation-rain-gauge.htm) is certainly another option.

Thanks,

Tye

Wow, thx.

I didn't realize you shipped internationally.
I'll keep that in mind.

It happened.
I became the owner of a TROPO rain gauge. The shipment from the USA arrived in 5 days. Very fast.
I didn't expect the rain gauge to be so big. It's a big plastic tube, wow.
Americans do everything on a grand scale.

I have already placed a rain gauge in the garden. It's still winter here, so I have a question for users and @Climalytic.

Is the plastic from which Tropo is made resistant to freezing and thawing of accumulated rain?
For me, temperatures are often positive during the day and negative at night. My earlier rain gauge (TFA Dostmann) was torn apart by freezing rain. I'm afraid that nothing will happen to Tropo.

Welcome to the TROPO family! Where did you purchase your gauge?

Of the 1000s of TROPOs in the field, we are only aware of a single gauge (inner tube) that allegedly cracked under the pressure of expanding ice during the past 3 years. In that one case, we suspect there was a fluke manufacturing glitch with that particular inner tube. The UV stabilized polycarbonate plastic we are using has a very high tensile strength and has proven to withstand repeated freeze thaw cycles. We’ve not yet been able to initiate cracking during our testing either, therefore we feel confident in declaring the gauge frost/freeze-proof.

We offer a 1 year warranty, so if a fracture or crack does occur, we want to know about it and will honor a free replacement. See https://store.climalytic.com/warranty-returns/.

Thanks for your purchase!

@Climalytic

Thank you for the extensive explanation. I feel calm.

I bought Tropo on amazon.com. It was just the easiest for me. A few mouse clicks and the parcel has been sent  :-).

I have both the TROPO and its predecessor, the Stratus gauge, and prefer the Stratus. I find the TROPO too big and unwieldy, but it has more “bells and whistles” if such are important to you. They aren’t to me. In fact, in the wintertime, the TROPO gauge is just not practical in the snow. I use 2 Stratus gauges—a clean and empty one (omitting inner measuring tube) from the house that I swap with the one outside each morning that I weigh to measure precipitation (snow or rain) in the gauge. Then weigh Stratus gauge with rain/snow, take that measurement less weight of empty (typically about 460 grams) then divide that net gram weight by 201 results in inches of water in gauge.

@WheatonRon

I wondered for a long time what to choose. Once I had Stratus in my basket, once Tropo. After thinking about it, I decided that comfort was more important to me than money. My choice of Tropo was not influenced by accessories (spikes, cleaning brush) but by ... the metric system used. I decided that I didn't want to convert units every time I took a reading. If the Stratus had metric units engraved, I would probably buy it, but it doesn't and that's why it lost the competition.

Well, I'm getting more comfortable as I get older (probably not just me)

All my CoCoRaHS gauges are in metric.  But this source would not be available for you.

I have extras to take daily sample of 24-hr Snowfall and Snowpack, in addition to the daily Gauge Catch observation.

Enjoy,

I had good timing to buy Tropo a few days before the sale.

I would pay 13% less today than I did 2 weeks ago  #-o
