Running WeatherLink and Cumulus Mx
« on: October 07, 2024, 04:42:56 PM »
Hi

I would like to run WeatherLink and Cumulus at the same time, can someone give me a rundown of the instructions and a direct link to the installer? I need VirtualVP running on my Windows 10 machine so I can run WeatherLink and Cumulus at the same time.

I have a usb Davis data loger running on port 4.

If anyone can provide detailed instructions on how to do it please? I’m quite bad when it gets to computers..

VirtualVP has not been updated since 2010 and although downloads are available it is unlikely to work on later Windows versions or Davis VP2 and the author is no longer contactable. You need a different solution.

Sorry but that is partially incorrect. I and many others here have used VVPro on Win 7 all the way to Win10 and Win11 with no issues. It works just fine and was written for the Vantage Pro 2. It runs trouble free. You will need to purchase VPSE (Virtual Serial Port Emulator) by Eterlogic.com for $24.95 to make it all work. VPSE is easy to set up. If you need any help please ask and I or several other users will help you. Currently my VVPro is feeding data seamlessly from my Vantage Pro 2 to 6 different weather programs. At one time I had a copy of VVPro on the weather computer feeding data to multiple weather programs while at the same sending data to a second copy of VVPro on a second test computer feeding multiple weather programs on it. So it really does work.

Yes but my understanding is  VirtualVP does not support the LOOP2 packet feature so it is not 100% compatible which is why I have seen it not recommended.

I use VPSE with WL and WD. I suspect running CMX4 and WL will work using VPSE.

Is it a paying software that VSEP? Also if I decided to go that way could anyone assist with the setup?

@broadstairs - No it doesn't support the Loop 2 command and won't work with the Davis 'Green Dot' logger. I am not going to go into a long tech detail on the Green Dot logger. However, it works fine with the older USB and Serial Loggers as well as third party loggers including the DIY Logger and WifiLogger at Scaled Instruments. So there are less expensive and fully functioning options available to Davis owners.

You have to purchase a one time license for VSPE (Virtual Serial Port Emulator) from Etherlogic.com for $24.95.

What about VirtualVp is that another option? If so can someone throw some guidance on it?

You have to have the Virtual Serial Port Emulator software( $24.95 ) if you choose to use VVPro (Virtual Vantage Pro or VirtualVp). VVPro is now free. As I understand it VVPro prevents data loss or traffic problems between programs and also provides TCIP connections as well. I am not sure if just running a serial port emulator would work without problems. If you are looking for a free solution, I am not aware of one. Here are some screen shots of my setup. If you notice I am running 6 weather programs.

I use VPSE (unregistered free version) to "split" COM4 to create COM10.  I setup WL and WD to connect to COM10.  Startup sequence is important.  I start WL bulletin first, allow it to capture records and go to the normal WL screen.  I then run WD but note that it will fail to import missed data.  If getting missed data is needed then run WD first, collect the missed data, then shutdown WD and start WL.  Once both are up and running I have not had any issues with running them.

As I understand if you only run VPSE there is a chance of conflicts between programs with the possibility of dropped data and retries that slows everything down. Long ago someone here tried using a serial port splitter on the serial datalogger and had problems like that.
