Online Hits
« on: October 22, 2012, 10:47:08 AM »
I just checked my Weather Underground station (KTXARLIN35) online and discovered it had logged 1684 hits. I don't ever recall receiving more than six or seven hundred per month. What kind of count are some of you receiving?

Right now 2449. Averaging over 100 a day.

I also don't leave my station's page up when I'm away. If you leave your stations page up for a while everytime the page refreshes it's self your visit is counted. Just for fun a few weeks ago I wrote down the view count one night before I hit the sack and closed the page. And the next morning I had about 128 views.

I never look at my Wunderground hits (SLOweather.com hits are more important to me) so it took me a while to find it on the page.

I remembered a discussion about this from a few years ago
http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=6890.0

Lots of theories, but no conclusions.  Even with a reply from WU support.
In looking at mine now, my 2010 theories dont play out in the current form of the counter.  But even back then it was all over the map.

One theory was if you were first in list for your city, that would count as a hit.  Back then I was first and had thousands of hits, other ones had handfuls.  2010, 6 hours into February I was at 956...... Now I'm second, and only have 116 "views".  So I clicked on geographic number 1 for Markham and they have a whopping 22 hits.  Myth Busted.  :-k

That was me, too. I didn't know there was a view counter.

For my web pages, I've got both Google Analytics and GoSquared running. GoSquared had a way to exclude owner views, but I'm on the free account, and that must have run out at the end of the trial period for the paid version. I just wrote asking them about that this morning, as I saw a *lot* more hits than normal. Then realized it was me while I was making several changes to my web page this weekend...

One theory I had was that some spots everyone uses Weather Underground while others use The Weather Channel. As sad as it is many people I've talked to have never heard of Weather Underground. Yet in my community Weather Underground is like a fashion statement. When I first registered my station I was the #1 on the forecast page. Then another station popped up a few blocks down and took that position. But I didn't see much effect on my views. It's been that way for years. About a few months ago my neighboring station disappeared and while I saw about a 15 view/day increase my overall total never changed. And my theory is people in certain areas use a service more than others and with time a station can build a good reputation in the community they provide too. And more and more people trust that station and use it for daily purposes. So if 100 people around my station use it for their daily weather because they like the data and other things provided they will return as happy customers.

2,670 day before yesterday when we had rain. During the rainy season Jun-Oct I run 3,500 to 4,500 daily, this time of year it drops down to around 2,000.

You guys' numbers are amazing! Over 6000 is more than 280 a day. That's more than double what I see in a month, apparently. But then I don't know anyone that even knows what Weather Underground is.

But then I don't know anyone that even knows what Weather Underground is.

And that's why my SLOweather hits are more important to me than Wunderground. As I said, I rarely check in there. I use them mainly as an archive for my data, to point the random email weather inquiry to.

For instance, for the month to date that my WU page has been viewed 1,571 times, SLOweather has seen 101,594 page views, according to Stat Counter.

In some cases I "wunder" if pimping out one's WU page too much takes traffic away from the main site. I used to mention all my affiliations on my site, but no more. Why should I go to the trouble of building a site just to drive traffic away to other sites by linking to them?

I live in a rural area, so I don't expect many hits.  On the other hand, if more fishermen knew about WU or my site, they might find the conditions on Watts Bar Lake informational.

That's a really good point! I have all nine sites that I send data to prominently linked with big images right on my front page. I'd rather they explore my other pages instead of leaving. (But then, I do intentionally commit the faux paux of having links open in a new page, so the visitor isnt really leaving unless they close my page's window.) GoSquared shows most views are just of my home page.

I can't imagine 1000 views a month, let alone 100,000! My max is something like 400.

Greg, before getting my weather station and setting up a web site, I didn't even know there was such a thing as personal weather sites! I had WU and Weather.com bookmarked, and that's where I got my online information.

I was probably like most folks with only a mild interest in weather, and don't go looking for more information.

Well, I've been at this for 10-12 years, and have done a lot of promotion in the past, passing out pens and such. Getting hooked up with the PG&E meteorologist hasn't hurt either. :)

Well I don't pay too much attention either to WU. like mention before use it more for history back up. As to the website who realy cares what is happening in an native village. Get maybe one hit an week from europe  or far away place even tho i see an follower from Ohio who does change in regularly. Most peeps here just pull up NWS website when they want the weather.
