Ecowitt support top notch
« on: May 30, 2024, 12:29:19 AM »
Hi all

Just a quick thumbs up to the Ecowitt support team for some recent help. After my WS-80 stopped sending solar and UV data I did an RMA request. Within hours I had a reply and within 24 hrs the problem was isolated and a new part is on the way.
In case anyone else has this issue it turns out that if the temp/humidity sensor craps out it can take down the data bus that both that and the solar/UV are connected to. Unplugging the temp/hum sensor fixed the solar and a new improved temp/hum sensor is on the way.

Excellent service, received with many thanks.

This is a very common issue with WS80s, mine has failed in this way 4 times in the past, as it's an older one I have to buy the replacement now. Bad design in my view as if it only affected the temp/hum part one could use en external sensor in a better shield and not remove/replace the damn thing!

they have at least learnt some lesson and created that pluggable T/RH sensor already in 2022.
And you can now more easily remove the T/RH sensor. I have replaced mine / type3 with a SHT35.
Together with the temprature compensation quite good.

Mine is a pluggable sensor but it is the old black plug, in order to update the sensor you have to have the blue socket and there is no update kit, it's a new WS80. However I now have a WN32 in a cheap shelter which I modified to be a daytime fars with a solar panel and PC fan which works well so next time my temp/hum sensor fails it will just go in the bin and not be replaced.

Oh, well that's interesting. I purchased mine direct from Ecowitt less than 12 months ago and they are sending me the new type of sensor with the guard. But the old sensor as you say is black (with a red O ring seal). Did I get sold old stock?

I'll let you know when the package arrives

I'm currently also running the WN32 so the one on the WS80 as you say is redundant. Unless it is working with the ultrasonic anemometer to provide some sort of temp stabilisation/compensation?

I've emailed the tech I was dealing with to check specifics of what they are sending me.

I don't think they are still producing or selling the type2 WS80 - alreay for quite some time only type3 (blue connector). I gt myself one recently and iz was type3.

Regarding the temperature compensation, I think you are confusing something here. The sensor doesn't do that. It only reads what it reads ... It's the console/gateway where the compensation takes place when switched on. Same for all calibrations except for wind zero baseline - the latter is done in the sensor.
