Weatherlink Pro changing to one device per subscription
« on: May 23, 2019, 09:07:00 AM »
I got an email last night from Davis: (emphasis is mine)

Quote
Important: We’ve made some changes to your subscription.

Due to unforeseen costs associated with storing weather data and maintaining the WeatherLink Cloud Network, we’ve made some changes to your subscription.

Previously you were able to upgrade 3 devices to Pro status with one annual subscription of $47.40 USD. As of Apr 10, 2019 each device upgrade will cost $47.40 USD.

Since you've upgraded more than one device you have two options:

Downgrade all but 1 device and maintain your single device upgrade.
Contact us to purchase additional device upgrades.

If you do nothing, we will automatically downgrade all but one of your devices using the following system:

Devices that you do not own will be downgraded first, in reverse order.
Your owned devices will be downgraded next, in reverse order.

I went in and downgraded everything except the WLL.

Surprise, surprise  that didn't take long did it, so much for this marvellous marketing and cloud crap, just give the capability back to the user instead of sucking everybody in then pulling the plug.

Hate to say it but i told you so...you guys argued with me and said it's about the cost of a cup of coffee.  ](*,)

Why would they even open up WLL for others to collect the data? If they did no one would need to pay them a subscription fee.

My thoughts exactly. If they charged an additional couple of bucks, I could understand it, but this is ridiculous.

Maybe they are trying to kick people with multiple stations off deliberately.

I'm not using their service but surely am irritated by this massive change in cost to the average Joe user.  Charge like $5/extra device/year and see how much they make.

I know, it is their extra charge for a domain name that they need to recover.

The sharing of data with all these organizations and making them seem a one stop shop for extensive wx data will dry out a bit. Maybe not completely, but for those sharing several stations, even if relatively closely co-located, will diminish the depth of their data pool.

Other than selling it back to us, is there another income source for them by selling or sharing these data ?

I was making some interface to upload data to weather services. I have to say, that only WeatherLink.com and WeatherUnderground.com are responsive, other services need some time to react.
WeatherLink use Amazon cloud which wants some money. Good business should pay own bills. So cash for good service is needed.
I have paid :)

But, pro account was for 10 devices, then they goes down to 3 and now to 1. Only problem is what would be next.
I think it will stay this line. Nothing bad will happened any more.

I don't like how WL.COM looks like. When I see it, I can't read my data, I have to focus, but works perfectly, data is when you like, not after 3 minutes (pwsweather.com).

Was it ever actually 10? All I can recall was a maximum of 3 until a few weeks back. Are you sure you're not thinking of Pro Shares, which is something different (a Pro share effectively enables you to give another user access to your archive data along with some other features), which was originally 10 IIRC but is now 6 for Pro and 10 for Pro+?

PS Zero tomorrow  ;)

Last year when I was buying PRO it was already 3 stations, but for some reasons I was thinking that year ago, or year and a little more, that PRO was for 10 stations.
I can be wrong, but I remeber that for 3 stations I had same reaction like this which is in this post for one.
Reaction is not because of service which is perfectly good, but for agreement changes.

In my opinion Wl.COM for Davis stations are perfect and best.
Most weather serivces will take care of basic weather data. Some will ask for weather data which VP2, or Vue do not have etc.
Only WL.COM take care of station modules.

I know the guy who was needed temp moisture, which WU was displaying. Well, not any more. Also there is no other weather service to display his value.
Now he is wathing on WL.COM and saying that is a good service for him.
In fact. This is the only service for him.

I have made little mistake here.
WL.COM and also Weather Element can display data from Davis modules like extra temp, hum, leaf wet, soil temp, soil moisture.
But you have to join the club to use it.

I'm not feeling so bad about my GoDaddy website host fees now.  For just a cloud service that does sound steep.

I use WxSolution software with my Weatherlink IP logger. I am able to send rapid fire updates to wunderground, have an awesome display on my local network running the WxClient app on windows, and even connect live with the iPhone/Android/iPad app.  Doesn’t get any better and only a one time fee for WxSolution. I’ve been running it for more than 10 years. Screenshots below. More info at thunderheadtech.com

(I’m not affiliated with thunderheadtech, just love their software and hate seeing folks get screwed with weatherlink online)

Hello
I continue to benefit from the offer at the abboneemnt Pro for 3/devices until 10. 07. 2019 (expiry)
so i added WLive at no additional cost

is there any manipulation (possibly) to do in my WL 2.0 management console to disable the auto-renew feature for my first two DIDs
and keep only the one related to my DID WLive?
thank you in advance REGARDS

AFAIK there's no need to do anything. Davis say:

'Customers who have upgraded more than one device will receive an email 30 days prior to their subscription anniversary explaining the change and informing them that their subscription will be applied to the first owned device they upgraded, and all others will be automatically downgraded. The email will include instructions on what to do if they want a to apply the subscription to a different device (log in to their account and downgrade all but their selected device) and how to purchase additional subscriptions.'

I really think that you do not need to worry. You only have a single Pro subscription and that is all that will be renewed. The change is that a single subscription was covering up to three devices, but you never did have three separate subscriptions. But you will now effectively choose which of three devices your single subscription should apply to.

Davis is being penny wise and pound foolish. I have 3 VP2s and was going to buy the Pro to capture my data from those 3 stations. That is worth $47.40 but when Davis tripled the price, I will pass. I pay Microsoft $99 per year to get updated software for its Office 365 program (Excel, Word, et al) as well as 1 terabyte of cloud storage available for all of my devices. I think that is a fair price, but Davis at nearly $150? I don’t think so. Not that they care or could do anything about it, I informed Davis support that a bad business decision had been made by Davis management.
