Title: Wu PWS and Account Migration Status Updates
Post by: wunderground-PWS on March 29, 2019, 03:46:11 PM
Update: 4/11/19

Rapidfire re-enabled
webcam association fixed
units obey prefs everywhere

TODO:
Add decimal precision.  Working on this, but still a couple weeks off
couple tweaks to dials and graphics

UPDATE 2 4/1/19

Devices will now show the correct reporting status on your
https://www.wunderground.com/member/devices
pages.
In a few cases, offline stations will continue to report as online. We are aware, and a fix for that is being discussed

UPDATE 4/1/19

Webcams Issue:  We found the root cause of PWS and Webcam association not working.  We are working on a fix, but this is new development so it might take some time to get out.

All.  Some status updates on the PWS changes

"My Devices" - we're aware that the page is incorrectly showing status.  We have a fix for this is will go out next week.
"Associated Webcams"  Working through this one, no ETA on a fix, but we're looking into it.  If you are experiencing this bug, it would be helpful if you reply with your station IDs in the following format.

PWSID|webcamID
this should look something like "KCASANFR11|wu_18763CAM1"

"Rapidfire" PWS page. fix is being worked on hopefully will go out next week pending developer availability.
"Unit conversion" this has been fixed will go out in a release within the next week
404 error when trying to get to your page, not being able to.  This is being investigated
Login Errors: clear your cookies, clear your cache, try another browser, if none of those things work, contact support.  We're still working through some issues after account migration
"Summary Data" This has been fixed, fix will be deployed in an upcoming release

Addendum:
I'm happy to help folks that are looking for support.
if you want to complain, bemoan the death of WU, rail against IBM, tell me i'm the dumbest person you have ever met and you can't believe how dumb i am and you would have done proper qa on the site and you can't believe how dumb I am.... take it somewhere else, i'm not gonna answer.

re:  "Login errors"

Depending on which page you go to on the site you're logged in or out.  There doesn't seem to be any consistent trigger, except that if (for example) I go directly to a regional weather page (e.g. https://www.wunderground.com/weather-radar/united-states-regional/il/springfield/animated) it never has me logged in even though other pages do.  You also appear to have cross-contaminated previously healthy logins with erroneous data.

This is a new issue.  One step forward, two steps back.

I know you’ve been getting a lot of suggestions and bug reports on this forum lately, but I’d like to add another suggestion. The solar, uv, and associated webcam tiles should not be displayed if a user does not have the hardware. It is a waste of space to display unused tiles.

Webcam not showing.

KFLWINTE111|galfertCAM1

I think part of the problem is that when I go to edit the webcam I see two issues. First there is a Device Name field that says Required that is blank. But my Webcam has a device name. Well at least it did on the old site. But now under My Devices the webcam are there with no device names. If I go to Wundermap I see my webcams.

The other problem is that at the bottom of the editing webcam page is has a box with Accept / Deny regarding "You Make Our Forecasts More Accurate, We Respect Your Privacy." Then a Save button at the bottom. Why should I have to accept or deny for an existing already set up webcam?  This should already default to Deny for existing webcam if this is a new requirement as I don't remember seeing this when I set the webcam up. If it isn't a new requirement then you should have migrated this Accept / Deny status.....as the Device name also should have been migrated. I can't click Save after I click either Accept or Deny because it requires a device name but I don't want to enter one in as because I know my webcam has a device name and I don't want to mess things up and tinker as you put your fixes in, for fear that then later everyone is up and running except me because I impatiently decided to tinker.

Thank you for all you dedication and hard work.

OK, webcams are still causing issues. I don't know why.  It seems to be for a small subset of people. All of our test accounts work, so I'm at a loss!

We'll get the QA team on it next week and get this solved.  In the meantime, please PM me the full response you get from here

Still unsure what password WU is looking for in Virtual Weather Station to be able to upload data to WU....

Is it a password that we log into WU with or is it an API key?

From what I can tell on my end both are reporting, galfertCAM1 is FTP and that is my main webcam that shows up on Wondermap, where galfertCAM2 is set up to use URL and that URL works but this method has always proven unreliable with WU. I don't really care about galfertCAM2, it was just set up as a test to compare FTP vs URL method of uploading. Thank you for looking into it. You can delete galfertCAM2 if you want....or I can delete it later. I'm just hesitant to make any changes to my account when things are in flux.

Under My Devices it says offline but station shows up on app and on the WU website.
Also is the Rapid Fire option not available any more.
Also saving the map type in the Wundermap does not save the particular map selected. This has been broken for a while.

All.  Some status updates on the PWS changes

Thanks for keeping us informed (I wasn't expecting updates over the weekend). Much appreciated!

I took a break and went skiing on Thursday, when I checked back Friday I was pleased to see the map was expanded to fill the block on my iPad and that the graphs now show a full 24 hours. Looking forward to Rapidfire returning and the summary data fix.

"Associated Webcams"  Working through this one, no ETA on a fix, but we're looking into it.  If you are experiencing this bug, it would be helpful if you reply with your station IDs

Responding per your request.  Associated Webcam is not found for KWVRIO3 / WU_534531CAM1

Also, I had Favorited my local forecast which has worked in Chrome on Windows10 until a week or so.   The saved working URL was www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KWVRIO3&cm_ven=localwx_pwsdash but now it reports a 404 error.  If I change the & symbol in the URL to a ? the page will partially load.   There is a major compatibility issue with WU and Chrome on Windows 10.   Very little works correctly.   Cache has been cleared.   Works better but not perfectly with Microsoft Edge.

These comments are all just information for you.   I know it's all being worked.

Lost webcam and not associated with reporting station
KAZBISBE3lOldBisbeeCAM1

I have had three webcams for many years. Two of them are working, OldBisbeeCAM2 &CAM3- that associate with my old station KAZBISBE4.
Since the upgrade, my main camera (setup has not changed) is now not allowed to upload FTP to webcam.wunderground.com.  This is what I get when I try to look at here -
http://icons.wunderground.com/webcamramdisk/o/l/OldBisbee/1/current.jpg

I also sent you a PM of my Profile.wunderground.com as per your request.

I have two weather cams associated with my account  KFLWINDE35.  One works as expected but when I added WU_0129533CAM2 it just says off line and never changes.  I use Blue Iris; the settings are the same for both cameras.  The test message sent to the WU server for both cameras comes back saying that Blue Iris and the server are communicating.

I have sent two e-mails to WU for assistance however there has never been a response.  I am trying to figure out what I may be doing wrong; can you help?

Thank You.

The mistake you're making is adding a camera while the site is being "upgraded".  Just be glad your one camera still works given the condition of things at WU during this project.

We are hopefully learning patience here while WU figures things out. We are about a week away from it being a month since they first announced the upgrading. Hopefully soon. One of the few here trying to be optimistic with this.

WU has been mostly broken since the *last* upgrade which was rolled out right when Hurricane Irma was rolling into south Florida in 2017.  For those without a calendar handy that's over 18 months ago.  You'll need the patience of Job to ride this out.

I'm wondering if I can get an answer from WU support regarding the way wind direction graphs are displayed in the new system.

I've attached a pic showing the wind direction graphs generated using the "old" system and the "new" system for the same period today.  The "new" graph is much smoother (as I'd expect from a coastal station, although it's a light wind day).  Looking at the two graphs, they're only roughly the same!

My station reports at 1 min intervals.  Just for completeness, it would be nice to know if the new graph is showing an average of the 5 reports between graphing intervals, where the old graph simply plots the most recently received observation?

No complaints though.  I like the "new" graph, which seems to smooth out the unavoidable wind variations caused by a less than ideal position.

The new graph shows the max wind speed recorded every 5 mins if reporting more than 1x per 5 mins.
The direction is a weighted average based on wind speed and direction

I'm wondering if I can get an answer from WU support regarding the way wind direction graphs are displayed in the new system.

Great work! I would also like to add the following to the ToDo list:

Also it would be nice to have custom mixed units....like Fahrenheit for temperature and hPa for pressure at the same time. Also hopefully your tweaks on dials and graphics includes reducing the wasted space and making the boxes smaller. Don't enlarge the already large graphics.

Hmmm....so this thread is NOT the new mega thread.  WU posted that they don't want to follow a mega thread. They prefer we post individual separate topics for each issue.
https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=36609.0

I think this is a great idea. This will also help the influx of newbies that keep asking the same questions over and over because they don't feel like reading a mega thread. If these newbies had a list of topics they could scan for or search they would find answers easier and it would stop them from asking repetitive questions.

I'm not saying don't post to this thread. ...but lets keep it on topic. This should only be about the finalization of the migration in regards with the pending known issues to be resolved.

I will not hash over many specific errors that I have seen reported already unless there is a specific request for more detail. Only a couple tidbits. It is(http://) updating fast but beside green dot at top left it always says one minute. The vertical separator for Wind/Gust makes it look like two hundred fifteen.

Keep up the good work.

Your station is updating so fast that WU is having trouble keeping up and showing a proper status. You also are running a very old version of WiFilogger firmware 1.24. You need to go through some steps to do some manual updates and then when you get to version 2.x (meaning 2 dot something...I think 2.0 but don't quote me) then the WiFilogger from that point on will be able to do simpler automatic or semi-automatic updates and get you to 2.15 (current). I'm not a WiFilogger user but that is what I've read from other users. See what happens after you on running current WiFilogger firmware. If it still is a problem you may want to look to see if you can modify the WiFilogger to upload every 10 seconds instead of like every 3 seconds that I think it is doing now.

One thing I just noticed as it's raining now, the precipitation rate stays at 0 in/hour until my rain gauge shows over .5 in/hour then it goes up to 1 in/hour. Repeats on the way back down. It would be nice to be a little more granular (.1 in/hour?).

You probably know this....but just in case, or rather to serve as information for others that read this too.

5-in-1 means 5 sensors in 1 unit...they are:

That is all the Acurite 5-in-1 does. UV is not one of them. Before the UV was something that WU appended to stations from other sources. With the new WU this seems to now be gone for all stations that do not report their own UV. I have not heard from the WU team if this feature is coming back. In the past though when a station didn't have its own UV to me it looked like it didn't work too well as for what UV value was displayed.

I have an Acurite 5 in 1 Weather Station that used to show the UV index on the old website, but shows as unavailable on the new website. Is this something that is being worked on?

You probably know this....but just in case, or rather to serve as information for others that read this too.

5-in-1 means 5 sensors in 1 unit...they are:
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Rain
  • Wind Speed
  • Wind Direction

That is all the Acurite 5-in-1 does. UV is not one of them. Before the UV was something that WU appended to stations from other sources. With the new WU this seems to now be gone for all stations that do not report their own UV. I have not heard from the WU team if this feature is coming back. In the past though when a station didn't have its own UV to me it looked like it didn't work too well as for what UV value was displayed.

I believe the stations that did not have uv to report, WU still showed it, but it came from some other source on WU's end.

! Please always note the date on the status of the article (blue) at the end, thank you !

Dear Wunderground :-)

Here's our first comment, ones a thank you for the latest adjustments and it fits very well in the mobil screen (Fhd) and is very clear!
For us, the boxes are definitely clearly and more intuitive readable which is only possible through the free space in it and therefore normaly needs no previous data text field above.
Everything adapts very well to the screen size, great.
So if we want, we can now make the browser look almost like a weather station, whether in portrait / landscape, or mobile / desktop page, a plus and just great. Our "users" like it too, thanks for that.
All other, it's for us also easy to read and to work with!

So now as a help a few minor malfunctions we have seen:
1.)
On the dashboard, the altitude is not in meters, but the unit is already.
2.)
In the boxes, at Dewpoint, the t and at hPa the a at the end, on the phone in portrait mode are barely / not seen, because it is far to the right.
3.)
The hPa pointer unfortunately shows something else, just not the right value, witch were right.
4.)
When looking for a point in the graphics, the associated time is often not visible on the screen, as it only appears at the top and bottom.

Dashboard special:
A.
!! green point for online, before thats comming it shows shortly red offline, with last updated 49 years ago !!

B.
! Wundermap over the forcast page shows the stations with imperial and on wundermap over the dashboard is not one station to see (looks like it will load, but nothing comes up) !

C.
hPa in the lower graphics, if the left-hand indication consists of more than 3 digits, by "1"000 or "," then the "1" is difficult or with "10"00,2 the "10" no longer visible / because out of the screen (Portrait and landscapemode).

On the weather forecast page is the following:
5.)
Elevation upside left, turns to meter but without the sign for.
6.)
Below the stations nearby are inserted very late (maybe we must first scroll the side to that place?!) and the units looks okay in metric, but all of the numbers are in imperial and the Cest is wrong, we think.
7.)
An ö in the street name into the nearby stations downside, is still displayed as a space.
8.)
Overall, the forecasting page will be displayed in Metric format with a delay, because Imperial was previously used.

If this is still corrected, everything is wonderful with wunderground ;-)

Last but not least, our station works always very well with you :-)

Ps.
Otherwise, we still find important in the dashboard, a year, as well as a separate period retrive and to download the data also.
In the last, it would be desirable if the Celsius temperature after the coma still receives a number.
For the real conclusion ;-), a quick link to the forecast side at the Menu line under the dashboard, would be very nice / helpfull and back from there too!
(Maybe my english is to bad, excuse me for that please)

Thanks in advance.

( ! last update of this post 13.04.2019 at 13:10, european summer time, thank you for your understanding ! )

Yours sincerely user

By the way ...in case anyone is wondering. The barometric pressure sensor is in the console and that is why it isn't one of the 5-in-1 sensors. The station does have that 6th sensor...it is just not counted as part of the outdoor unit. It is a common mistake some people make that think that the barometric pressure sensor is in the outside unit. Which gets them all confused as to what their station elevation is. They don't know if the elevation is ground level or if it is at the level they mounted their all-in-one outdoor sensor....or if it is the level of their anemometer if they have a separate anemometer...etc. So to fix the confusion, your reported station elevation is ...[drum roll]... ground level plus the extra height to your console where your barometer is (table height if on ground level). So if you move your console up or down a flight of stairs you've changed your barometric pressure (not much, but some), and you should account for that.

I remember a reading a post on this forum from a good many years back (like 11 years ago). It was kind of funny. Some people start chatting on this forum how there is this one station near them throwing off MADIS analysis data because there is this station reporting some incredible height for elevation that is totally wrong for the area. This one station was reporting 500 meters and everything nearby was 350 to 400 meters by comparison. The people on this forum name the station ID. Then that causes the station owner to register here just to reply (They probably Googled their Station ID and found the post - 2 years later.) So this person is all upset for what they feel is people calling him an idiot. So he chimes in and says something like, "It's called a tower!" That was their 1 and only post to this forum. Basically the person had entered in the elevation for his station to correspond to his equipment (anemometer) all the way up this huge 4 leg antenna structure. You could see the picture of the huge radio tower in the station page. The funny thing is the barometer was not all the way up the huge radio tower. Later that year his station stopped reporting...maybe he moved or quit. Not making fun of the guy just that they probably should not have been so adamant about being right and they could have listened and learned and then nicely have said thank you for point out their mistake. We all make mistakes. The point being he was wrong and took insult in people complaining about his station. Even though this was a long time ago, those posts are still on here if you dig for it. That user hasn't logged in here in 9 years. Unless they changed their identity

I don’t see the purpose of the space dedicated to UV and a webcam if a person isn’t uploading same. My preference would to leave the space blank.

We have kidded each other re the concept of WU awarding a pws with a “goldstar”. I don’t see goldstars anywhere on the new pages. Is that concept dead or is it coming back down the road, and if so, what will be the criteria for a pws to receive such a designation?

They still exist on the old site and are still being updated. I had a gold star but the other day I brought the station in for some maintenance and I must not have waited long enough before installing the batteries and bringing it back on line because I had a huge temperature spike and my gold star immediately went away.

If you go into “My Devices”, there is a section called quality. The section is blank for now, but it looks like WU has a plan for it.

If you are correct that the section labeled “quality” will be used as a QC, that will be unfortunate, because I don’t believe anyone other than the station owner will be able to see that information as it appears embedded in “my devices.” The QC checks that MADIS and MesoWest perform are viewable to everybody and are pretty effective, particularly those performed by MesoWest. Such public visibility also was possible with the Goldstars issued previously by WU, although in my experience, the designation as a Goldstar station was inconsistent bordering on being termed “flawed.”

A good step even a small leap forward. Bravo.

Did all that. No change in the recency report beside the green dot. Always shows one minute.

Funny I see for a second or two during auto-change  from imperial to metric it shows red dot and last update 49 years ago. Easter Egg, lol.

It looks to me like your UV was not reporting to WU since before the migration to the new WU site. I know it doesn't seem that way to you so hear me out. Start by looking at the old WU site and go back in time to before the WU new site (March 18). Go way back in time too. Check many dates.

http://horizon.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KUTNORTH14

What you'll notice on the old site for your station is that there is solar radiation but there is no data nor graphs for UV. So you are asking yourself why did you see UV on the old site for live data. The reason is because on the old WU for any site that did not report UV then WU would use external sources to show a live UV for your station. But only live UV and no UV history. There are other people claiming that their UV went away with the new WU. Some people just now realize that their station doesn't have UV. But you are saying to yourself that you do have UV and you can see it in Cumulus. Well the problem seems like Cumulus in your case is not set right to send UV to WU....it never has sent UV to WU as evidenced by looking at your old WU site.

But Cumulus is capable of sending UV. Just take a look at PaulMy's old WU also running Cumulus 1 and you'll see how he does have both UV and Solar in both graphs and data.

http://horizon.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=IONTARIO226

So something is up with your Cumulus as it never has sent UV to WU.

I wonder if WU could make the map area have a tab to switch between the map and webcam (if present), like the previous layout had.  The best part of the old layout was seeing my webcam image prominent alongside the data.  Having those two elements together really added to a whole greater than the sum of the parts. Now, having to scroll to the bottom for the webcam image is kind of a drag.
I understand that PWS's having an associated webcam is the exception rather than the rule, (I wonder what %, guessing 10-15%) but maybe if webcam images were more prominently positioned it would motivate additional PWS owners to add a webcam.  KIDBOISE93
