now one can see the effect of the heater over a whole days below 0°C.

and over one week - it's clearly visible when the heating was switched on.
Usually the difference in the sensor values is 0.1C-0.4° C where the WH31-EP in the Metoshield Pro is the most realistic..

Thanks Gyvate, I guess it was inevitable that the heater (low power as it is) would essentially have an impact on the temperature sensor readings being that the sensor is so close.

I have to say though that the need for heating needs to be looked at closely as so far I have avoided any problems with wind readings without using said heater plate (mine being a pre-production model does not have the cable installed). I am though in Southern England with a kind climate that so far has not thrown up a combination of wet/freezing that has upset the ultrasonic emitters to date.

Not that I mind much.
I have my reference sensor (WH31-EP in my Meteoshield).

And the wind measurements haven't been an issue either (until switching on the heater - longer I cannot tell).
However, the solar panel and the solar sensor need to be functional, what they aren't when covered with snow or ice.

I might take a closer look into the idea of an automated brush inspired by Quagmire's post.

Here's a couple of shots I took yesterday when we had 2-3 inches of snow here plus temps moving between 1C to -5C. Photos at an angle now as I've managed to move my WS80 mount to a higher position (actually similar to WS68) but found a way to get the heater cable to it. The heater is plugged in and switched on for these photos (I'm assuming it was in use, not measured power after initial testing when it drew 12W). From looking at it it seems to be working.

As an aside, if I'm taking the wind data from WS80 into a GW1000, but taking the temp data from a WH32 (at ground level) into same GW1000, does anyone know how I can still access the temp data from WS80 to check out the above heating effect for example? Or is that impossible and I just have to temporarily disable the WH32 in any given console to find out.

As far as I know this is impossible.
The WH32 is favored by the station - other WS80 values are certainly transferred - but ignored by the station.
So you have to disable the WH32 to see the temperature values of the WS80.
Alternatively: use a GW1000 and disable the WH32 there.

Only if you have more than one console and make respective assignments - or have some hardware+software which read directly from the sensor (which would then factually be a console) and reconcile it e.g. in weewx.
Another way which I use is:
I have a WH32 and a WH31 put together in one shield - so I can take the WH31 signal as the WH32 (they produce exactly the same readings - checked this over 1/2 year) - then it works with one GW1000 - and I display them together in one chart.

Yes thanks I did a quick test of that approach by ignoring the WH32 on my HP2551C (mainly because I use that for display only, it’s the GW1000s/Pi that record the data for me and upload to web/community services, aside from Ecowitt.net).

In the few hours I tested it, I believe the heater was on given the temp here is just <0C and dark. I noticed that the temperature of the WS80 reported was consistently about 0.8C ish higher than my WH32. And that’s despite my WH32 is now at 1m level in the Ecowitt shield (I know not great) so mounted in shade under a tree, whereas the WS80 is almost exactly 10m right at the top of the roof now exposed.

HI

My Ecowiit  Gw1003 has finally been shipped and is winging its way to the UK as I write.

I have one job to do before it arrives on the 16th Feb, and that is to sort out the WS80 heater cable.  I have lots of 12v dc o/p AC adaptors here so I was not going to pay another  load of dosh for the Ecowitt one. (The adaptor will be in the house, just a 12v twin cable to the heater outside, so I don't need a weather proof adaptor.)

I have read all the replies in this thread, and  cannot find a definitive answer to the info I am after. There are several types mooted, but I am unclear what is the answer.

I need a cable mounted 2 pin socket, to connect to the Ecowitt  plug on the end of the short heater cable.    Please, has anyone got a definitive type / part number for this connector?    (That not only fits the pins but will screw together and be water proof?)

I know I can wait till my WS80 is delivered and research it myself, but if I have to get a connector from China, it will take another month. With the present weather conditions in the UK, the heater need to be connected and working from the start.   I know I can make a temporary bodge till I get a proper connector, but I was hoping to have all the bits ready for when the WS arrives, and not have to keep running up and down a ladder.

thanks in advance

regards

Patrick

Hi
Thanks for reply.

My problem, is that although several people here  have measured the supplied connector and published the numbers (above). the Chinese vendors of  similar connectors do not give reliable sizes of their offerings. One Ebay vendor gives the  maximum dimension of the coupling nut, but not the thread.

I am guessing it is a M12 fine, but some dimensioned drawings I have seen for other vendors state M13 or M15 !!  Pin diameters appear to be another minefield

I will see if Ecowitt can provide any info.    Otherwise I think I will bodge it.  I can find a couple of suitable pins in my junk box,  I'll crimp them to a two core cable, ram the pins into the end of the Ecowitt connector, and secure and waterproof the joint  with a piece of heat shrink tubing. If the joint with sleeving will fit back inside the tube from the WS80, it should be out of the weather.

As a previous poster said, it is not advisable to lop the supplied plug off the WS80 feed cable until the warranty has expired, in case I need to return it for repair / replacement.

cheers P

That's exactly what I did with mine; couldn't be arsed to find the proper connector. Been workin' fine ever since.

I have seen that type of weatherproof DC connector used on various LED outdoor landscape lights and heavy duty holiday lights.

With the snow covering the solar panel in the winter, and snow not measured (until it becomes melted water) by the rain gauge I hope someone comes up with a handy breakout cable add-on that can use a suitably sized 12vdc power supply to also melt snow on the rain gauge and provide the 3vdc backup power to the wind gauge and perhaps even 1.5vdc for the rain gauge transmitter.  I do admit that changing the batteries every year or two does have the benefit of encouraging me to go up on the roof to clean out leaves and wipe off bird offerings.

I look forward to trying out a WS80 based system to compare to the WeatherFlow Tempest that I have been running for a while now.

Perhaps among these listings the proper connector can be found?

If the heater is connected - will it always heat?
Or is there in the WS80 unit a heating switch based on temperature reading?
(Or do I need to set up a solution where the heater adapter is powerd based on outside temperature?)

it's not always heating - there is a thermostat, but what its upper and lower thresholds are I don't know.
If you take a look at the graphs earlier posted by me in this thread, you can see that the temperature  ups and downs only occur at temperatures below 0° C.

Apologies if this has been pointed out elsewhere.
Extract from WS80 manual.

I know it's an old thread - but in order to keep things together in +/- one place I want to post the socket description of the Ecowitt 12V/1A DC power supply outlet I happened to received from Ecowitt:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I hope it will be useful for somebody wanting to use their own power supply.
I needed this info as I want to use the cable end with the power supply and with a solar panel (which needs a USB plug) interchangeably. Otherwise I would just have cut off the end and soldered a USB plug to it.
