Question on MADIS Temp Error
« on: September 09, 2024, 02:54:21 PM »
I have had my WS-5000 station feeding MADIS for 2-3 weeks now via AmbientCWOP. My pressure and dew point QC data are at 100% passing rate but my temperature is only at 90-95% passing. Specifically, my readings are both colder than QC during the night and warmer than QC during the daytime. Just today, I noticed my station data was 7.5 degrees F colder than QC at 5 AM and was 7 degrees F warmer than QC at just 10:30 AM. This is causing intermittent L3 Spacial Consistency Check errors 5-10% of each day, during the periods of the day when the temperature increase and decrease with the sun position. This station is located in rural West Virginia in a valley with very tall surrounding mountains, with relatively few MADIS comparison stations nearby and none at the same elevation. Temperature seems to widely vary here in this part of the state, being so mountainous. In some hollows it will frost while others don't. Could these failing QC checks indicate the microclimates of the region are extreme or is there likely to be an issue with the sensor or placement somehow? I don't see how it could be sensor error when the margin of error reported just hours apart was +7 degrees and -7 degrees;a 14 degree error swing!

Note that I have no MADIS experience. :)

However, perhaps this page may be useful: https://madis.ncep.noaa.gov/madis_sfc_qc_notes.shtml
I note that temperature errors can be 'internal' to a single station.

Might suggest, in addition to madis,....
https://viewer.synopticdata.com/map/data/now/air-temperature
https://mesowest.utah.edu/
and compare your station with others nearby.  Synoptic may updated faster than others, it's a main ingester and distributor.
