How to accurately read temp and humidity in a bedroom
« on: August 06, 2022, 07:34:25 PM »
Hi, im going insane trying to find a device that accurately can tell you the temp (in celsius) and humidity. I have asked, and some say, they often aren't calibrated, or can't trust them, etc etc, so I don't know what to do.
I need a device that is ready to use, I have no idea how these chips things work.

The idea is to get baseline readings of temp and humidity in my bedroom before I implement changes like a dehumidifier, or a humidifier as needed. I suspect something is off and I will need adjustments but I want to know the levels before I do any changes.

Im also interested in reading PM2.5 ppm levels, so if the device would be a 3 in 1, that would be great.

Thanks

The Davis VP2 console does have inside temperature and humidity.
If you go to this link it is the manual for the console. On page 50/51 it gives the specs for inside temp and humidity.

Use a humidor sensor like Xikar Purotemp etc. You can calibrate those with Boveda calibration pack (https://store.bovedainc.com/products/boveda-one-step-hygrometer-calibration-kit-75-rh).  No need to mess around with salts and what not.

Anyone has any experience with a device like this?

https://www.elitecheu.com/products/temtop-lkc-1000s-2nd-air-quality-monitor?variant=43086562001155

I just picked up one since it's on sale and I found a discount code, final price 119€. I saw it was quite accurate in the tests here:

https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-pm2-5-air-quality-monitors-in-2022/

At least the 1st generation one. One would assume 2nd generation is better but you never know. Anyway, at least pm2.5 should have decent readings here.

Now I just need a temp+humidity one to double check this thing gives accurate readings for that.

Use a humidor sensor like Xikar Purotemp etc. You can calibrate those with Boveda calibration pack (https://store.bovedainc.com/products/boveda-one-step-hygrometer-calibration-kit-75-rh).  No need to mess around with salts and what not.

What does that Xikar one use? I've read SHT31 was recommended. I saw this thing but im not sure if it's a ready to run gadget with a button to press on/off

https://www.digikey.es/reference-designs/en/sensor-solutions/temperature-sensing/2005

From what i've read, it has a button, so I guess it's that white dot, and you can just use it like a regular gadget. It says you can do tracking with it. Not sure what software would one need to extract any data. I would like to disable wireless features anyway, not sure if possible. I doubt I will be using the tracking features. But if the sensor is accurate I may buy this one, price seems reasonable at 30€.

If it's good for several thousand € worth of cigars, it's OK for you bedroom.
Take a look at Govee Smart Sensor or maybe SensorPush wireless or something (has several versions).

The thing with these smart things is, you are gaining in data by having a sensor on each room, but I don't like the extra wifi stuff. I turn off Wifi and wireless on everything I have. See this:

I'm gonna guess the owners manual for that TV tells you to remain a safe distance away. You are not watching it from 2 inches in front of the screen.
