Bought new station-Do I need to buy new version of VWS
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:07:33 PM »
Forgive me if this question is been asked before.  I looked through as much as I could and was getting a headache so I decided just to ask.  I am pretty sure of the answer.
I bought a new Davis station.  My old one was a WMR968.  I know I will need a different version of VWS but do you have to pay a full price for the new one or can I just download it.
Second, do I have to uninstall the old version before I install the new one?  I have all the data backed up on a thumb drive.
Thanks for your help!!!! =D> =D>  I don't know where I would be without all the help I have received from all you and be sure I do appreciate it and I hope I can be just a small help to you some time.  Thanks again,
              Mark

VWS comes in one flavor - do everything.
It covers these wx stations.
# All Davis Weather Stations, including the Vantage Pro, Vantage Pro Plus, Vantage Pro2, Vantage Pro2 Plus, Wizard III, Monitor II, and Perception
# All Oregon Scientific Weather Stations, including the RMS300A, RMS600A, WMR100A, WMR100NA, WMR100N, WMR200, WMR-918, WMR-928N, WMR-968 and WM-918
# La Crosse Technology WS-2300, WS-2305, WS-2308, WS-2310, WS-2315, WS-2317, WS-3600, and WS-3610 (all stations that run Heavy Weather).
# Some Radio Shack Weather Stations, including the WX-200 and Accuweather Wireless Station 63-1016
# Huger WM-918 (same as the Oregon Scientific WM-918)
# Rainwise MKIII, WT-2000 and MH-1 Hazmat
# WeatherHawk Weather Stations
# Peet Bros Weather Stations
# Kestrel 4000
# Texas Weather Instruments Stations
# Columbia Weather Systems Weather Stations
It may be a good time to download the latest version and set up new, different databases.
I have two VWS folders.  The original was renamed "VWS old".  Then I installed the later version into the VWS folder.
Al Washington, Lexington, Ga.,  NWS Coop station=LXTG1, Fischer Porter, SRG, MMTS.
CoCoRaHS=GA-OG-1. CWOP=CW2074.  Davis VP2+ WLIP 5.9.2, VP(original) serial, VWS v15.00 p02. ImageSalsa, Win7 & Win8 all-in-one.

I am sorry I did not make myself clear .  I know that VWS works with my new station and that I need v14.00.  I was wondering if as a registered owner, when I download the new version do I have to pay the full price for the new version?  And you answered my second question.  I was going to create 2 files old and new.
   Thanks, apprececiate the info;

Mark,

Updates to VWS are free. They use the same registration code you were issued when you bought the software.

Bob,
Thanks for the info!!  I thought that was the case but wanted to make sure before I downloaded.  Money a bit tight at the moment.

Your license is good for one station at a time however.  Did the O/S die, or did you just decide to take it out of service and replace it?

Congrats Mark on your new station!  I've updated VWS many times.  I'm not sure with a new station if you have to do new install or just an upgrade.  If no one else is able to answer, you can always email support.  Ed is real good at getting back to you and answering questions.

All you should have to do is connect the new station and in vws select the new station under station settings.

Thanks,
Anthony

Thanks to everybody for your replies!  I really appreciate your kind help.  I am going to retire the WMR968 station so I will only have 1 station running.  The Davis is supposed to be here tomorrow so I can't wait.  It's comforting to know that I have all of you waiting to help should I need it =D>.  I will give you an update as soon as possible!!

Big, big congrats Mark!
My wish list has a Davis somewhere near the top.
I do have reliability and accuracy now with my OS...so I have some time to wait.
Good luck to you sir...we're all envious!  =D>

Henry,
I have been having some of those second thoughts ever since I clicked on the send order button.  I couldn't pass up the price Ambient had on it.  I don't know how long it had been there because it was kind of hard to find.  I went to the 6152 ($535) and was looking over the page and at the bottom was the same thing for $396!  I figured something had to be different.  Factory serviced or something like that.  But no.  The Weatherlink was on sale to.  I guess I am a sucker for a sale. ;)

Congrats from MX as well, I wish a Davis was in our budget, but just pulled the trigger on a WMS200 which will become the new workhorse for us here.

We don't attempt to ship things down here so it will arrive in TX and I'll bring it S the middle of Oct. That will miss the rainy season, but we'll be ready for next year because also waiting in TX is a genuine 8" funnel for the rain gauge modification, so we'll not only have a data logger to document when the power goes out (which is fairly regular) but increased accuracy for rain.

Thank you to all of you for your kind words =D>.  It all arrived about an hour ago.  now I have to read some instructions.  Usually I just jump in with both feet #-o .  I think I will try to be more patient so I don't screw somrthing up 8-[.  At least if I run into any problems I have some friends to go to who will know the solution to my problem .
Thanks again all, you are awesome!!!

 Anthony,
Even though I have a ton of yard work to do and I have to clean out the garage, I think the station takes priority.  First things first!!

Yeah, I want to see the new rig in action as well, even if you did go to the "other side".  :-)

Got everything put together and have verified that all is running as it should.  Man was I nervous putting it together.  I felt like I did when I scrubbed in on my first solo surgery as a technologist.  I thought for sure I was going to break something absolutely vital 8-[ 8-[.  I was praying hard the whole time [-o<.  But all turned out well.
I will be installing tomorrow.  Had hoped I could come up with a place other than the roof tri-pod but I have no place around me anywhere.  So, on the roof it is.  Thank goodness I have a nephew that is really interested in this stuff and he wants to go up there whenever he can.
So, now all I have to do is get Weatherlink and VWS up and running.  I have all my data from the 968 backed up on a thumbdrive, so, just have to wait and see what happens.
I will keep you updated.  It sure is good to know that I have the very best backup in the whole wide world in all of you!!  And I do appreciated it.
