Ambient Weather WS-2000 vs. WS-5000
« on: November 18, 2021, 06:56:40 PM »
I am about to pull the trigger on one of these stations.  Right now I have a quickly fading 5-in-1 from Acurite.  I was wondering if anyone had any input or opinions.  The one drawback of the 5000 is the need in winter to have it close to an electrical outlet for the heater (an added expense as well).  My question, are the components and build better in the 5000 over the 2000 or are they about the same?  I would prefer to get one that would tend to last longer.  I do not need to have my station super far from my house, although increased range might help out in any case.   Does one require more maintenance that the other?
But I am open to opinions, especially from people that might have used both.
thanks

I am a newbie with weather stations and definitely not an expert. I installed my WS-2000 in Aug. and love it. Everything works as advertised ... no installation issues, no problems with WU or AmbientWeather.net. I added a battery backup for the console, added the lightning detector and a couple of extra temperature/humidity sensors. I did contact Ambient support with a couple of questions and got quick and accurate responses from their support system. I am very satisfied.

My main array is about 110 ft. from my house (console sitting near a window), and I have a WH31E and the WH31L about 125 feet away from the house. So far I have had no signal loss issues.

The WS80 part of the WS5000 does have slightly longer range than the traditional all in one sensor array (Y/I) type.
It also has an advantage of less maintenance since the rain sensor is separate and can be mounted near to the ground where it should be and so is easier to keep clean of debris etc
Yes the WS80 needs a heater but only if you have very cold icy winters. In my locale in the Southern UK I have not needed this in the several years I have operated a WS80.

I am considering getting the WS-500 (HP2553?) and have a few questions if anyone would be so kind.

Location is South East England (Fleet, Hants). Assume I will need to buy from ecowitt to get the right frequency.

Is it worth getting the lightening detector for my location? I think it only alerts if DP >70f?

Assume I will need to buy a pole as well?

I want to measure the temp away from the anemometer as its likely the sighting wont be ideal for both. Assume I can get an extra temp sensor? or do I need the hydrometer to measure temp and dew etc?

I would really like to be able to show sunshine hours. Do I need Cumulus for that and therefore the GW1000?

And finally, where can I purchase from, doesnt look like any are available in the uk at the moment?

Many thanks and much appreciated

First... I am happy with my WS-5000.   I think it is more sensitive to wind speed measurements than my Davis and Tempest.

I don't think the DP has to be greater than 70 for the lightning detector to "detect".   You may be confused with the fact that the console will show a lightning bolt when the DP IS greater than 70... indicating better chances of thunderstorms.   I have not had my unit during thunderstorm season so cannot comment on how reliable it is.

The temperature unit is part of the wind sensor but you can purchase an extra temp/humidity/dewpoint unit.

The ambient does show UV and brightness.

You can see my station at https://ambientweather.net/dashboard/56c7e8537b60696949a82085b48d9239 .

Hope that helps some.

Yes the WS80 needs a heater but only if you have very cold icy winters. In my locale in the Southern UK I have not needed this in the several years I have operated a WS80.

How cold do you get, roughly speaking? Here in Seattle, we regularly get to 25 F / -3.8 C overnight in the winter. We may occasionally have days or a few days that stay just below freezing. Stretches of days below 20 F / -6.6 C happen every few years.
