Anyone tried AWeather?
« on: May 18, 2020, 04:28:46 PM »
I recently stumbled across a software called AWeather. It's a a free/open source application that can view Level-II NEXRAD data. I haven't gotten it to work properly and I was wondering if anyone has tried it before.

Always looking for new L2 software but this hasn't been updated  in over 7 years.
Probably not working for you because it may not be compatible with the current Windows environment.

Interesting... The program starts up and runs just fine. I get an error that says it could not fetch radar data. I triple checked the URL for Iowa State's level II service. I wonder if the develops didn't renew a licence or something.

I am using that same one with GR2 right now and it's working fine.
As far as I know that's a free feed, but I could be wrong.
Is there any contact support for the program?

Something you could try is to get a temporary sub from Allison House and see if that works.
That is if you can change the data provider. It may be hard written into the program.

Yeah I don't think there's any support left. I could try contacting the developer but it's been over 6 years so I'm assuming the project has been abandoned. My guess is that the data provider changed a file format or something and the program adapted.

Well I think I found the issue. The program uses a custom version of the TRMM Radar Software Library (RSL) for accessing Level-II radar files. AWeather's version that come's with the latest release is like 4 versions out of date. The developer uploaded an updated version of the RSL in 2017 to go with the latest version from the weather service. Now I just have to find out a way to patch the old program and hope it works. The good news is that the developer still has an active email so maybe he's willing to resurrect the project.

The feeds for most, if not all radar data has gone to https. This could be part of the issue as well.
GR2AE, GR3, Cumulus
