VWS AND WIN 98
« on: January 17, 2009, 04:50:32 PM »
I am trying to install VWS version 13.01 on an older computer running Windows 98 and I keep getting the following error "file not found" and the installation stops.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

I wish I knew. The exact error message is "The system cannot find the file specified"

Can you try a slim version of windows 2000 or even XP, that would be better.

Yes I will run it on my XP computrer if I can not get it to work on this old Win 98 machine. I was hoping to use the old computer as a stand alone for just this software thus freening up my internet computer.

JimC, Don't be afraid to try VWS on that machine with Win XP.

I am running VWS on with WIN XP Pro SP3 on a Pentium2 300Mhz machine and it runs well and very energy efficient.

Sam,

Thanks for the suggestion. I put XP on the old Pentium II and it and VWS are working great.  :-)

No problem, I just had an instinct to say that to you earlier.  It must be the weather gods influencing us.

I just purchased a Gateway 2300 with Windows 98 to use as a stand alone with VWS and am getting the same error.
ANY way to fix this? I am attempting to install vws 13.01
Everything else seems to work.
Heavyweather installed fine and I am interfaced with my Lacrosse 2315.
Thanks
Dave

According to the ambient site 98 was still supported in ver 13.  You should contact ambient.

I can confirm that version 13.01 p09 works on Win98.  I have an Athlon 700Mhz with 296Mb RAM running VWS for my Davis VP2.

Do you think reformatting to 98SE might help? Add that file the install is looking for?

OK! Got it.
I downloaded 13.01 several times to make sure I had a good copy I still kept getting the error File not found.
I attempted to install version 12.08 just to see what would happen.
It bounced through the install and asked for 'disk 2'.
Arghhh!
I decided to wipe anything installed and start from scratch.
In program files I found a Virtual Weather Station Installer folder, hmm, hadn't seen that before.
I opened it and inside was another (?) setup icon and a VWS installer icon.
THINKING maybe this was disk 2 of version 12.08 I clicked the setup icon.
Poof 13.01 was fully installed and accepted my license key.
All is good.
