One of the reasons... finances. Grants and subsidies come and go, and if you're a member, you probably participate with a few bucks once or twice a year to support, as grants come and go... initial production of the calendars is expensive, and cash must be on hand.
Another reason: CCR staffing or volunteers to help design, etc... they're just stretched thin, and with Zach getting promoted, and Noah, e.g., assuming Zack's duties in addition to Noah's 'normal' responsibilities, there's another crimp... staff / time ... guess what: back to finances.
Now, I thought.... surely there are many folks aboard here, with all kinds of corporate connections... some might even be willing to 'join' CCR, but aren't aware that it's an excellent place to 'deposit extra monies' (equipment, software, talent, ... ad infinitum) ...
A somewhat unique 'contributor' is ETgauge of Loveland, CO, who spent years with CCR / CSU staff evaluating the ETo for use with CCR and make a very special price tag available only to CCR observers -- and only through Lucy at WeatherYourWay.. who works diligently to scan the 'field' for great deals, when available, for certain items... by the way, ETo stations in US grew about 30% last year! This data is being sought more and more as station count grows,...
Yeah,... CCR ETo is expensive, in a manner of speaking, but most of the cost is driven by the very advanced, expensive Ceramic used..., (don't break it!) and the PTFE and Canvas design.... which is why they retail for about $400,.,. CCR observers pay a whole lot less than that.. a whole lot...
So, a 'calendar' publisher who's also got a soft spot for CCR might be welcome.
