First I bought some of that 1 " square mesh ..



then cut it to make a sharp wires ..  attached it with some tie wraps .. No more birds sitting on the rain gauge
 and doing their business ..


I changed the wooden pole out with a 3/16 - metal pole .. Much nicer ..

I had this at the other site and thought it might help someone ..

I like it.  I previously used tape with nails sticking up, but at the adhesive on the tape starts to lose hold, the nails begin to tilt or fall over.  Thanks for the tip.

That looks like an easier approach to sitting birds and the problems they cause!
With all these scares about the "bird flu" and all any time you can keep bird dropping away from what you come in contact with it's likely a good idea!
All that sort of thing made me look at the situation a little closer..
