Memory leak fix?
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:05:01 PM »
I'm running 14.00 p90. I have a memory leak and I'm getting tired of it. I am running startwatch and have it set at 200mb. It restarts it about once a day. Sometimes it can't shut it down so has to restart the computer. Maybe this happens when it tries to reload VWS when its busy or something.

Anyway I'm just wondering if this has been fixed yet or not. I haven't been on the forum in quite a while and the search didn't turn anything new up. I'm pretty sure that I didn't have this memory leak on my first install on the desktop many months ago but since it was installed on the dedicated weather computer (netbook) it has had this problem. I know there have been many small versions since my first install from disk in Nov. 2009 and just wonder if its worth upgrading. I have no known problems other than the memory leak.

FWIW, I am running VWS v14.00 p101 and have just about always had memory leak problems with VWS since 2005. Startwatch is the only thing keeping my system running 24/7. I get a restart once or twice a day and have Startwatch set at 150MB and haven't had any problems with it restarting successfully.

Perhaps the later versions of VWS don't exhibit the problem but my guess is that this is something Ed has never been able to isolate and fix. Not everyone has the problem and thus, the reason for it being a tough issue to find and then fix.

Yeah that's the way it was when I looked into this before where it was affecting some and not others. I'm sure thankful for Startwatch! Maybe I will see if I can open a can of worms and install the latest version tomorrow. I haven't done any upgrades since the version that came on disk. Mine will go days at a time reloading VWS just fine but sometimes it has to restart the computer when VWS won't shut down.

Well I tried to upgrade this morning and failed. I after running the install I was not able to connect to the envoy via virtual vp as I had before. The settings were unchanged, vvp showed a live connection but no data from the envoy. I tried tcp/ip and still no go. I connected VWS directly to the envoy and that worked. I hate messing with this stuff when its running a website and sending data all over. I was down for one hour. Anyway I deleted the VWS directory and copied the old one back in its place and all seems to be back to normal.

WXMoab and W3DRM: Have you ever tried to upgrade to the latest version? I think that memory leak was fixed several versions ago.

That's what I was trying to do because I wanted to see if the memory problem was fixed.

VWS 14.01 P31 and no memory leaks here. I have never run into a memory leak in the past few versions. The only time my weather computer gets rebooted is when Win 7 updates are applied.

I didn't have the memory problem on another computer. It started when I moved to the netbook and I have no idea why. I will have to try this again another time I guess and see if I can get it to communicate. First install was on XP pro on a desktop but the netbook is running xp home. Doesn't seem like that would make any diff but its the only diff. I can think of.

I'm on p46 and it runs for weeks, sometimes months with no problem. If I reboot it's for a reason other than VWS.

I lost the link to older version, hopefully someone has it. Ed doesn't seem to specifically number his downloads and so you have to save and mark them yourself.

I found a copy from 2011

Go to http://saratoga-weather.org/  the download is in VWS/vws_install-V14.01p46-Beta.exe

I didn't do it as a clickable link here so the search engines won't harvest it :)

By the looks of it, this issue has not yet been resolved as he is showing no data. I hope he didn't give up and turn away from all the help here.
