I recently got a Canon S100 compact and do love what it can do.
The large version of this is astonishingly detailed.

The camera takes nice, clear, shots. I'm currently looking to replace my dead Nikon as well.
Beautiful view you have there!

I take a Canon S100 with me on bike rides during suitable weather.  The fast f2 lens lets you take fairly good photos in less than ideal light.  Panoramas stitched together in Photoshop and taken with this camera are phenomenal.  A couple of the current banners on my website were taken with it, but the resolution has been pared down.  The arena construction banner (#12) is an HDR that I took with the S100 early this fall while on the trail.  The pictures in full resolution are, as you said, phenomenal considering it's the size of a deck of cards.
