Got a dropdown menu system you like?
« on: August 25, 2006, 05:41:08 PM »
I've been experimenting with adding drop-down menus to my weather site, and came across a free menu system from www.aitoc.com (In Belarus, no less) that serves the needs (XML specification for menus, dynamic creation, works with all browsers).  Regretably, there is no support from them for this free software (I did ask them...).

You can see my test zone at http://saratoga-weather.org/blank-menu-test.php

The menus work fine in IE, Opera, but behave strangely in FF and Netscape, but ONLY if the DOCTYPE is XHTML .. works fine on all for HTML DOCTYPE.

I'd like to keep XHTML 1.0-Strict on the website, so I'm wondering if you have any favorite menu systems (free is nice, paid is ok) for horizontal, drop-down menus that are cross-browser and XHTML.

I do know about www.milonic.com :-)

Best regards,
Ken

There are several reviewed here:
http://www.chipchapin.com/WebTools/MenuTools/

I'm using the last one on the list, Xpandmenu, to build the new SLOweather.

One of the pages I built for demo is http://wx.sloweather.com/pointconceptionwaves.php . I messed with the colors in the CSS while I figured out what affected what, so, as of this writing, it's still a work in progress.

There's a newer version of that one at http://www.phpclasses.org/browse/package/2333.html if you need a parent menu item that has children and children of children.

That review page is over a year old. There may be more menus available now on http://www.phpclasses.org/ .

Apycom's DHTML Menu is pretty nice. You can even use it for free if you don't mind having a link to them on your page.

Ken,  I know you said you know about Milonic, is there an issue with them?  They even offer it for free for a non-commercial weather site.  I've been using it for a while and just wonder if you know something that might be a concern.

I use AllWebMenus Pro, a bit pricey for the pro edition but it sure made life easy on me to setup dropdowns, and to add items as I go along. They have a ton of different looks and buttons available. I use Firefox and IE no problem, just be careful of some of the effects like shades and so on.
