Title: Betting on the weather!
Post by: FishDude on October 31, 2008, 08:12:06 AM
I have been shopping for new windows for the house. One of the companies I am considering came out with an intersting weather gimmick/promotion that got me to thinking.

Gimmick:

Buy your windows now & they are free if it snows on X-Mas Eve.

I really don't think I will choose this company, but I got to wondering how I could figure out what the odds are for it snowing here in Rochester, NY on that day.....

An online travel company in Canada has a similar promo,

"if it snows more than 5"s on New Years day your travel is free if you book between between June 17 and October 19 for departures between November 1, and April 30"

Last winter, they paid out in Quebec, Toronto missed by a quarter inch, and down east they got 9" but over Jan 1 and 2...  Even out west they had a pretty good snow, but shy....

It was all over the news when the forecasts came in for New years day..., if Calgary, Toronto, and Halifax all hit the mark, the company or its insurance policy would have taken a huge hit...

If I lived in Rochester, NY, I would have had the new windows from that co. yesterday.

If you are getting new windows anyway, what have you got to lose?

Unless they're POS windows. #-o
