Gusts aren't 10 minute???
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:51:13 AM »
I recently installed VirtualVP onto my weather PC in an effort to combat the Vue USB dropout issue. This has worked well so far with one exception.

Ever since I changed Cumulus from reading the data directly from the station via COM port over to collecting the data via VirtualVP I noticed that the "Average" wind speed and the "Gust" wind speed were extremely close together all the time.

Example, in the past I'd see Average 15, Gust 22km/h. But now I was seeing Average 21, Gust 22km/h.
I kept an eye on Cumulus and noticed this:
At 12:38pm, we had a gust to 25km/h
At 12:40pm, gust was still listed as 25 km/h.
But at 12:41pm, gust dropped to 21km/h.
Then at 12:42pm to 19km/h.
At 12:45pm, we had another gust to 27km/h.
By 12:48pm, the gust value dropped again.

I checked the "Nov12log.txt" file and found that the "10 minute Gust" value is only displaying for 3 minutes instead of the 10 minutes it is supposed to.

I checked the old "Oct12log.txt" file and found that it was previously working fine and correctly displaying for 10 minutes, up until the day I installed VirtualVP, from then on it has been displaying a 3 minute Gust instead of a 10 minute Gust.

I haven't been able to find anything about this issue online, though I did find that the options "AvgSpeedMinutes" and "PeakGustMinutes" could be added to the cumulus.ini file.

So I added both and set them both to 10 minutes, e.g. "PeakGustMinutes=10", "AvgSpeedMinutes=10". Restarted cumulus and found no change.
This is quite frustrating and is making my wind data look odd having the wind speed and gust so close together.

Hi there,

What is your data log interval set to? You can find this by going through the following path: Configuration, Station, Data log interval. This might be something to do with it.

Hope I can help,

Will

I suspect that VVP is caching data like the max gust last 10 minutes from the console, but not doing that on the 10 minute interval
i.e VVP is passing on that own collected and cached data from the console (i.e cumulus thinks its getting the data live and direct but its actualy what is stored internaly in VVP for that command used (via the davis dll file)

So yes, you need to set your log interval to 10 mins or to 1 mins.

I dont think that is related, the data logger interval
as the last 10 minute max gust is stored on the console itself and is not related to the data logging interval

Well, the console links to the data logger, so it is really.

no, as the console has its own memory,of hi/los, used on the console display, independent of the data logger

Yeah all fixed now.. Nothing to do with the datalogger interval.
As my original post stated the only thing that had changed about my configuration was the addition of VirtualVP.

The datalogging interval is 1 minute and has been for the whole time I've had cumulus, so that was unrelated.

The problem was that the line "VP2SleepInterval=1100" needed to be added to the cumulus.ini file whenever getting data from VirtualVP, due to cumulus getting a response from VirtualVP much quicker than it would from an actual station.

ah
so the 10 minute timing to check for max gust was based on responses from the data query (which is faster with VVP in use) instead of actual PC  clock elapsed time

Brian, I think you need punctuation. Don't know if you ever learnt it at school!  ](*,)

What does this have to do with the price of rice in China?

Might help if someone posts in my post about ajax-gizmo.php
