Some data values don't update for hours?
« on: July 17, 2010, 12:30:45 PM »
Hi,

Late last year I updated my computer from a WinXP system to a Win7-64 system.

Ever since, some of the data values (such as outside temp and humidity) don't update for hours at a time.  Note that it usually happens to only one value at a time (in other words, only certain values aren't updating, but others are).

Here is a link to my website, you can see where the Outside Temp graph goes flat numerous times:
http://www.msoares.com/weather/wx.htm

Anybody have any suggestions/ideas?

My weather station is an old Oregon Scientific WM-918.

(I am using a Prolific USB-2-Serial adaptor for the communications link to the weather station, which seems to be one of the best for Win7-64.)

Thanks,
Matt

I doubt its related to W7 upgrade..
but, though, make sure that the software is set to be running as administrator

does that data change on the console?

Hard to tell with the graph but it looks like the temp might have stopped updating at the same time each day for the last three days and possible today also.  What is going on with your computer at this time?    Do you have something scheduled running on the computer at this time.  Reduce the number of hours for the graph to get a better idea of the time.

Not sure I helped, but maybe something to look at.

Definitely set to run as administrator.

Regarding does the data change on the console...  I'm not sure, but I think so.  However it is a good question and I will pay closer attention to that.

Thanks!

Thanks Jay,

There are times that it seems to happen more often, such as midnight, at least for the temp. value.  However, notice that other data items are being updated during this time, so it can't be an issue with the computer just not letting VWS run (also, this PC has an Intel i7 processor, no way I'm running any processes that can take up all of its processing power...).  You can see that the humidity graph shows the same issue, but not usually at different times.

I have had a problem with an erroneous entry following 23:59.  For some reason I get an entry for 23:59 the next day so no data will be logged until the time/date is greater than the erroneous entry. Deleting this entry allows the proper updating of graphs and data.  My problem occurs again just after the 23:59 entry. Any ideas?

I have been running VWS on Windows XP Pro 64-bit for more than a year.

I've been running VWS on Windows 7 64 bit since December.  No issues.

Ambient's site states in one place that VWS "runs on most Windows 64-bit operating systems".  The issue would almost have to be related to the Win7 upgrade given the onset of the problem.

Another example of why upgrading the operating system is usually a bad idea.  Unfortunately I've been down that road too.

Just to clarify, this wasn't just an OS upgrade, it was an entirely new system.

Problem Solved!

I replaced my USB2Serial cable and the problem appears to be gone (36 hours so far with no issues).

For the record:

Bad: USB-2-Serial cable with the Prolific chipset and latest drivers (from both the Prolific web site and cable manufacturer web site).  Did not work reliably on my Win 7-64 system.

Good:  USB-2-Serial cable with the FTDI chipset, and whatever drivers Windows found.  (Note that I did not install any drivers myself.  I simply plugged in the cable and let Windows search for the appropriate drivers, which it was able to find.)

For those of you who are interested, you can find USB-2-Serial cables with the FTDI chipset at www.usbgear.com.  Do a search for "FTDI".  Also, for many of their cables it says which chipset is used in the product descriptions.

Thanks everyone,
Matt

I've been running on a new little Dell Zino 64 bit for a couple of months, no problems here.
