So, for the past several days my WU page has been sans gold star. I’ve reviewed all the stats on their pages and everything is in order. Perhaps except for the fact that I’ve reported EXTREME rainfalls for our area. Yup, poor WU doesn’t realize that Seattle and surrounds even has downpours in addition to the daily drizzle. There isn’t an emoticon to reflect “embarrassed for you” WU, so I’ll use this one :???:
-
In the last week or so, each of my three pws that had goldstars lost this coveted award. My guess is that WU is doing away with the idea. Too bad, if properly administered, a great idea. However, lately the concept has not been properly administered.
-
I see no evidence that WU is doing away with Gold Stars. I lose and gain my Gold Star all the time. I know the loss is not due to my station changing anything. The loss is probably due to WU resetting their servers and changing who knows whatever code, because we all know they are experimenting on the live system rather than in a test environment.
I have a Gold Star at this very moment....for all 4 of my WU IDs. What is strange is that at times one or more of the stations will lose the star but there is sometimes one or two that retain the star. That right there is proof that it isn't me, it isn't my data. Because all 4 of my WU IDs are the exact same weather data. The reason I have multiple IDs is just for testing different consoles, and different weather software. Therefore it makes no sense when one ID loses its star and another doesn't.
-
They took mine away this morning. I’m so depressed. Life isn’t worth living anymore. \:D/
-
The reason I believe our friends at WU are finally killing the Goldstar concept is the column previously designated “quality check” or words to that effect, has been dropped from WU. If you log in to your WU account and then click on “my devices” that column has been deleted.
-
Yes, the column goes away and then comes back. Seen it several times over several months.
By the way you might might to black out your station keys in the screenshot!
-
Thank you guys for the donation of your gold star. It came back after 4 months. Much appreciated.
-
My mistake. A Goldstar on one of my pws has been restored and the “quality” column has also returned. If I didn’t know better, I would have assumed WU was being run by the Three Stooges! How unfortunate. WU used to be a quality site where folks could see numerous pws and grades (the Goldstar) than meant something. Now it seems like chaos and disorganization reigns.

IBM only budgeted for a few so we have to time-share them.

Actually these were found in a dumpster behind their building.

I have a feeling that the WU Gold Star periodically disappears because the reported wind direction/speed doesn't correlate well with whatever algorithm WU uses to determine what it "should" be. Taking away the star could be valid if the anemometer siting isn't close to published standards. A faulty siting will typically not be noticeable if the winds are predominantly in the 12 - 15 mph range and above but when you've got days of lighter winds, a bad siting can produce vastly incorrect data; thus, a loss of the star.

Ok guys, which one of you took it back?
-
I think someone from WU mentioned they were changing the data points used to determine the stars awhile back. It's probably buried in one of the WU threads from a few months back.

Unless something has changed, the only "supposed" parameter they check for is air temperature, and frankly think that is/was a load of crap. To think that they check for wind would make their heads explode (the wind is by far the hardest to "verify"), they can't even come close to running what they have. The star has been and always will be an absolute worthless gimmick.

My gold star appears briefly when the page loads but then disappears. Could anyone please confirm if they can see it?

Ray, you're good as Gold, and didn't disappear for me even after several page changes,
Enjoy,

On the fast train to mediocrity. Every 2 weeks it is there for a few hours then gone. Middle of the day, calm, no rain, measured pressure the same and temperature nearly the same as nearby stations. Sigh................... :???:
-
Racer3 and Paul, thank you both. Unfortunately both on an iPad and Windows 10 laptop it appears briefly and then disappears. Not sure how to fix it.
-
What browser(s) are you using?
Worked fine for me on Win10 using Firefox.

Firefox on Windows 10 and also Safari on an iPad. I’ll try IE and see if that helps. I did turn off adblocker so it’s not that.
LATER: Just tried with Microsoft Edge and the same happens. Appears briefly then disappears. I suspect it's a location issue. I assume all you are US based.

As my popcorn reserves run low, I still have no "badge of honor" since I started this thread. Alas, I resorted to stop sending my "free" data to WU for a few hours in the hopes that should I resume submission (read into that as you wish), my shiny badge of honor would re-appear. But my point is, I no longer receive the 'wake up' notifications from WU that (HEY!) your station is off line. Be that as it may, one would THINK that when a reliable weather station that has maintained 'their level of quality' for a period of several 'years', that they (IBM) has the capability of notifying the station owner that they are missing the mark for ______ (fill in the blank). Clearly, IBM's entrance into the "Cloud" isn't very impressive, considering the US DOD signed a multi-billion dollar contract with Microsoft. Whoops. WU is not what it used to be. Case Closed. Rats...I burned my last batch of popcorn.
-
Well does it make you feel better about IBM's cloud if I tell you that WU uses Amazon's AWS cloud?.... Yep, not kidding.
But it really comes down to software development (along with management and funding), not really cloud platforms.

Which is quite the hoot considering this...

I feel so "special". This morning, while drinking my coffee, not eating popcorn or Pringles, I noticed I now have the coveted "Gold Star". I think I'll just bask in the glow today.
-
I to got my Gold star back . Life seems so much better now . The air smell cleaner , food taste better, I feel happier . When I woke up this morning I thought I heard all the birds singing just to me . I'm sure because of this I will win the lottery any day now !! I wish everyone a happy Gold star day !!
-
CHOKE, COUGH, GASP (stupid popcorn). I see my badge of courage has suddenly re-appeared as well. I swear...I did nothing. ](*,)
-
It's nice to put down the popcorn and pick up the Bon Bon's for a change.

Popcorn Balls...inhaled the whole thing
-
I don't worry about the star , even though I have one. I am just glad to be able to share weather conditions here with someone who might use them for good and not evil (cackling in the back ground)
-
Thank you Aardvark. I need to know when your weather is clear enough for my Gold Star death ray to be effective.
-
And.............once again I spoke too soon...hrumph.

Mine disappeared as of this morning. So much for basking in the glow.
-
Well it was fun while it lasted  I must have angered the people at WeatherUnderground or maybe I didn't praise them enough for they took what they gave and sadly my GOLD star has vanished . I woke up this morning and my coffee didn't taste them same , my muffin was a tad bit cold and life just seemed down . After logging on to WU I found the reason for my pain . I will try and stay positive but without my GOLD star it will be hard . Good luck to everyone else . Written with HEAVY SARCASM [tup] [tup] [tup]

Don't feel too bad, it's been raining here since mine disappeared on the 7th. Even my beer is flat now!
-
I have the vaapas! I just refreshed my dashbiard and the coveted gold star has reappeared once again. The rain stopped, the sun came out (and it's 21:30) and my beer isn't flat any more!

The sun is, once again, behind the clouds, the rain is coming down an my beer went flat yet again.
-
While the board was down a miracle occurred, perhaps related to the Holidays, my treasured "Gold Star" has reappeared even though nothing has changed.
I like spoof comedies and there's an old space spoof, "Galaxina", that uses a gimmick called the Blue Star. Every time someone mention the Blue Star, and it's always mentioned in reverential tones, in the movie an orchestra and choir play for a few seconds. Every time I talk about the Gold Star here, I think about that gimmick and laugh.
-
My gold star suddenly reappeared out of nowhere as well, for no reason at all.
I was just wondering if every time my gold star appears if an angel gets his wings?
"Right Clarence? (wink)
-
While Ken was fighting server fires (thank you for your hard work!) I wasted a few minutes to document the Gold Star status in my ‘hood’. As you can see, there is no rhyme or reason why some stations are gilded with gold, and others coal.
-
No rhyme or reason on the damn gold stars. I had one for two days when I started sending my data. Then gone. I know for a fact that a station a few miles away has a bad temp/hum sensor, since the humidity is always at 1% and they ALWAYS have a gold star. I think they play FAVORITES!! #-o
-
The Gold Star comes and goes like the wind. Who cares any more?
-
I gave up caring. I look on CWOP or APRS and see my data has been nonstop and all good since I set the station up. Thats all thats impotent to me.
-
Thats all thats impotent to me.
They make medicine for that now... :)
My gold star was suddenly taken away a week ago. It has auto-magically returned today. No wonder I was able to completely clean with only one wipe this morning!

I spoke too soon. As of this morning they've stripped me of my medal. No reason given. This is stupid.

No, this is IBM!

I thought this was funny.
I'm set up for those "Gold Star Alerts" where you are emailed when you lose or gain your gold star. This morning I received an alert that I GAINED my Gold Star at 1:30 AM and then another at 1:41 AM that it was lost.
Then at 6:05 AM, another that I gained it again. I'm glad I didn't get too excited because I lost it at 6:16 AM. I've determined that someone in the dead of night is stealing the star as soon as I get another one. I'm going to set up a web cam on my Gold Star to find out who is doing this. :)
-
Shows you how much I pay attention, I didn't even know I had one. Then again in the browser I have all of the places I report to on, I have it scrolled down so I can see the summary information, so its probably been there for a long time and I just never saw it.
I wouldn't be surprised if IBM (they own WU now, says it proudly when you open the Android app) takes them away and melts them down and sells them when the gold price is right....

I plagiarized this from a 2017 post regarding goldstars / I have one by-the-way [tup]
Directly from the WU web site
Are you a quality gold star weather station?
← Personal Weather Stations
How can I tell what stations have high quality data?
All weather station data goes through a quality control (QC) process.
Each station is checked for
Data Validity - Is the data within the valid range?
Sensor Failure - Does you sensor appear stuck or repeat the same value throughout the day?
Neighbor Check - Does your station agree with other nearby stations?
If your data passes all of these quality control (QC) checks, it will appear on our website and apps.
If you station is continuously passing our quality control process for 5 consecutive days, your station will be flagged as gold star.
You can tell whether your station is gold star by logging into your WU account on our website www.wunderground.com
Go to My Profile > My Weather Stations

Interesting, but the fact that my station received a gold star, lost it, received another and then lost it within a span of 5 hours kinda' shows that it's not exactly true.
-
Sounds like their algorithm is 99% temper, one percent mental.
Having seen lately how their website loads my page sometimes, I wouldn't be surprised if the Gold Star server has the same issues.
-
If it weren't for the adblocker extension in my browser doing its job, I'd never visit the WU website. Ever.
-
RIP the Goldstar concept?
My 3 stations no longer have a gold star, and my check of several nearby stations resulted in not finding a single gold star station. If true, probably the right decision by WU as the concept has turned into a joke—well documented in this Forum, in several different threads.
-
I checked within 100 miles of my location and didn't find any with gold stars.
I say get it right or just don't do it!
-
Since all the great ( ya I'm kidding ) software updates probably reset the system that WU uses for the gold star ( two monkeys and a dart board ) so you should start seeing them again in 4 or 5 day's . You all know WU/IBM quality is job 1 #-o #-o #-o #-o ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

IBM’s stock price climbed 7.2% today. Probably the result of staff cuts associated with maintaining the now apparently deceased Goldstar concept. [tup]

Naw. They melted them down and bought back a bunch of shares to prop up the price.

YES! mine came and went the same way, it's as if we're going through a revolving door really fast and all the gold stars are flying out onto the sidewalk.
-
Are Gold Stars gone for good? I just checked several dozen stations along the west coast of the US and not a single station is flying their gold star. Perhaps a new virus (GS-20) is spreading and knocking out all the gold stars.
-
I haven't seen a Gold Star in a while. Under My Devices the column for them is also gone. But I've seen that column disappear in the past only to reappear later.
-
Did a search in my area of other pws. Not one gold star. But then again, it is tax time
-
Found a Gold Star..
Not my site
https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KPARENFR4
=D>
-
KPARENFR4 shows no recorded values except pressure since December first. That must be the new criteria for getting a gold star, stop all your other sensor values from uploading.
-
The Goldstar concept has apparently been resurrected by WU after being absent for months. 2 of my 3 stations now have that designation. Been that way for a couple of days now!
-
apparently, if you complained at all to WU, you dont get a Gold star reward \:D/
-

I'm jealous, nothing in my area yet. I spot checked 6 or 8 nearby stations including a couple of Davis stations always had one previously but no joy.
-
They are starting to reappear in my neighborhood now. No luck for me yet but the two closest Davis stations have one and a few others nearby too.
-
My 3 pws no longer have a goldstar, none of the pws around me have a Goldstar any more and when clicking on logging into WU then showing your “devices” the column that used to say Quality then display the Goldstar is no longer present. Bottom line? WU continues to show disrespect to all of us that send them our data.

But you can't set it up anymore as the person running this service has taken it down. I suppose though if you got in early then your alerts are still running.
I never set it up. The whole thing is pointless.
