Hosting weather cam images?
« on: November 20, 2022, 12:06:22 PM »
I am looking for a hosted solution that will let me pull in images from a weather cam and post them with a thumbnail image of the noon conditions on each day of a calendar, then allow Aires visitors to click that day to see a timelapse of the full day's weather video, then back out to watch a timelapse of the full month and full year for the seasons changing.

Any suggestions?

I am also willing to consider a locally run Windows/Mac/Unix solution.

I do something similar - you can see my November 2022 thumbnail page with links to each day's 24-hour video here: https://novawx.dscloud.me/202211.php. I've had my webcam since Feb 2022 and you can see the other monthly thumbnail pages by navigating from https://novawx.dscloud.me to Weather Cam → Archive → 2022 then choose a month to view.

I use IPTimelapse for my webcam and I run it on my Windows PC and upload the files to my Synology NAS server where I host my website. I have IPTimelapse setup to take an image every 3 seconds to build a 60-minute mp4 file video (https://novawx.dscloud.me/wxcam-lapse.php) and then each day it combines the 24 mp4 files into the 24-hour video. I wrote a couple of PowerShell scripts that manipulate the files and they run from Windows Task Scheduler. One script copies the noon image file and saves it on the server as the day's thumbnail image.

I don't create a full month nor full year video but I'm sure it can be done but the files could be extremely large. The average file size of my 24-hour mp4 files is 500 MB. That file size depends on how often you take an image file to build the video file. Mine are fairly large because I capture an image every 3 seconds but that can be done at any interval - it just depends how smooth you want the video to be.

I can share the PowerShell scripts if you are interested.

Why?

Why would anyone, anywhere do that?

I can honestly say that I have never, not even once looked at any 'weather cam' images from anywhere.
