new to raspberry Pi
« on: April 06, 2018, 01:14:23 PM »
I got a PI 3 and want to run weewx on it. I got raspian installed and setup wifi. Still need to update. Looks pretty cool as is.

Do I need to setup SHH and install Apache prior to installing weewx. I am not sure what next steps to take. Last programming I ever did was machine language for Z80 processor back in the early 90s. Looking for executable code and so far finding source. Guess I will need to figure out cmake and how to compile files.

Cheers, Doug

If you mean ssh and not SHH then this is what you need.
sudo apt-get install ssh

There are several links to installing weewx on RPi. None of them require you to compile any source code.

Start out with these :
https://davies-barnard.co.uk/2013/12/31/weewx-rasp/
http://www.instructables.com/id/Acurite-5-in-1-Weather-Station-Using-a-Raspberry-P/

The RPi user base is very good about documenting projects.  Mine is an early model 2B and I have found someone has written an installation guide on everything I have tried to install. Apache, MySQL, Album, samba, bluetooth drivers are some of the packages I used. Just be aware that some of the early (2014, 2015) documents might have you loading applications and/or packages that are now included in the current raspian releases.

Here's the "quickstart" page.  Very painless installation for the Pi.

Beware the PI addiction trap! :-)  I have succumbed to it and now have one to mirror a private Wordpress site which hosts our Community Band Performances, a Flight Aware PI, a Flight Radar 24 PI, a local NOAA Radio PI, and a couple more unfinished projects.  Initial setup with HDMI and wired LAN is painless, after which wireless LAN and ssh are all that are needed to keep them running.  Just beware automatically upgrading Raspian with special-use PI's such as Flight Aware, etc.

Using the PI's re-familiarized me with modern Linux distributions enough so that I was able to buy a cheap, no longer available, Lenovo server and,
thanks to a Gbit fiber-optic internet connection with a permanent IP address, duplicate (without SSL) my GoDaddy hosted web site.  Fortunately WeatherDisplay along with Virtual Vantage Pro are versatile enough to support such a ...well... mess.

Here is a funny twist. I have been working for ibm a few years now in the hospitals IM/IT. They gave me a laptop with redhat linux. I had to send all my spreadsheets, written communications had to be submitted in word or excel. I quickly got tired of converting all the documents so installed Win 7 KVM. After that never really looked back until now.

Convert what?  Libre Office etc. produce MS-compatible documents/sheets.  I do it all the time.

It came down to a difference in the version compatibility between MS and Libra being used. Documents saved in office format would not always open or would generate an error. long time ago to recall all the details. I was not the only one having issues at the time.
