HELP!!!! forum page jumps up and down - seriously unusable!
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:46:14 AM »
OK, this problem wasn't here yesterday evening after the upgrade, but it is here now on both Chrome and Firefox on Win 7.  If you have a big monitor (mine is 2048 wide and my browser windows is full screen) then some of the fading in and out "news" text in the upper right forum is causing the rest of the message posts, boards etc to "jump" down the page for about 5 seconds and then "jump" back up for 5 seconds.

The problem here is that the vertical space allocated for the text that shows up there changes vertical height depending on the length of the text.  So shorter messages only take up one line and longer ones take up two lines.  Since this text changes every 5 seconds or so, the page continuously jumps up and down and the whole forum is unreadable!

I thought I could turn off this news bar in the Profile but the option I selected to turn it off did not work.

My monitor is a 22" which is pretty normal size these days and I'm surprised I"m the only one having this issue. It could be that other people just don't run the web browser window full screen with a monitor of this size.

When I make the web browser window smaller, what appears to be about 1100 pixels wide, the problem goes away.

Ken, please help!   This problem only cropped up this morning (maybe there was no fading text last night?

I'm going to try to post a video of this in a few minutes....

No issues here - Win 7 32/64 on 13-24" monitors.  Are your drivers up to date?

I verified that my video drivers are up to date.

I don't think it was a driver issues as AFTER the forum was upgraded, I was browsing it last night and had no problem on any page.  This morning is when the problem started.  Also, I still had Chrome tabs open from my browsing session last night and when I viewed those this morning (no refresh), they looked fine.

I'm having a problem getting a good video screen capture of this issue.  It is really annoying.

Ken, regarding the text in the upper right that slowly fades from one thing to the next, what changed between last night and this morning?

As you know there are a million reasons  why it might have changed.  System update.  Drivers.  Browser version.  Hardware etc.  Do a cold boot and try again I say.

I rebooted twice.  There were no updates that occured on my computer. The fact that I could have two tabs of Chrome open with one from last night not exhibiting the problem and any new tab exhibits the problem is indicative of an issue outside of an update on my system I think.

OK, I just checked this on another computer with a screen resolution of 1600 pixels wide and the same "jumping up and down" occurs.  I tride Chrome, Firefox, and IE and the problem occurs on all three on both computers.  Also, of Firefox and IE I have NO extensions or plug-ins loaded on either computer.

What is going on here?

OK, now this is a very real issue and it can't be just on my computers.

Just for grins I tried viewing the forum on my 7" Google Nexus tablet using Chrome and the exact same jumping occurs!   The Nexus has a 1280 pixel wide resolution.

piconut,

Just to let you know, I'm seeing the same thing here with FF.  Happens when it switches from 1 line to 2 and again when it switches back.

exactly!

Geeze....I'm sorry you're seeing it too but at least I'm not the only one.  Can you check it in a couple other browsers and report back?

Yes, it's doing it With IE as well as chrome.  My resolution is set at 1920 x 1200 if that  helps.  I'm sure if Ken makes that 2-line entry a single line this will go away.

A quick workaround. Collapse the page header using the up arrow at the top right.

I may have just found part of the problem.  The option under MODIFY PROFILE > FORUM PROFILE to toggle the "Show Scrolling News" does not work.  The news strip at the top right shows up no matter what I have selected there.  The text wrapping of the news strip is what is causing the problem and my guess is that people who aren't having this issue fall into one of the three categories:

1) their Browser and/or screen width is very narrow like 1100 pixels
2) they don't have the News showing (scrolling/fading) at the top right of the forum pages and that option is not selected
3) they have their forum headers collapsed (toggle the arrow at the top right of the forum)

Can someone help confirm or deny this?

Yep, that temporarily fixed it because it IS the news ticker that is causing the problem.  The collapse page header hides the news ticker (among other things).

Do you occasionally see this in the upper right of each forum page?:

Besuchen Sie unser deutsches Schwesterforum www.wxforum.de

Also, what resolution are you running?

Ok... I've backed out the 'news scroller' and restored the 'fixed news' which displays a new (random) news item with each page reload.

I'll work on getting a non-jumping and user-selectable-disable for the feature (tested with multiple browsers) using a test copy of the forum.

Sorry for the inconvenience .. hopefully this will restore the usability as requested.
You are correct in that it is a 'feature' added late last night (shouldn't do that!) so was visible this morning.  I have a test version of the forum that I'll experiment with.  The user profile field
was added, but it does nothing yet until the scroller is fully installed.

Best regards,
Ken

So if you see that text then we know you can see the "news scroll".

On mine, the "Besuchen Sie unser deutsches Schwesterforum www.wxforum.de" takes up one line, but the other 3 news items that scroll through there take up two lines.  What about yours?  Do all the items take up only one line or do some take up one and some take up two?
