WH40 rain gauge funnel extension
« on: September 09, 2022, 04:30:27 AM »
I am aware that some folks here have been able to add what I'm guessing is a 3D printed extension to the funnel of their WH40. What are the chances of this becoming generally available for those who do not have a 3D printer. Is there any likelihood of Ecowitt redesigning what I am sure is a poor design?

- One way is to have a piece printed by a specialized company - mine was about 38 EUR/30 GBP shipping included. I don't have a 3D printer myself
The 3D printing file (.stl) was shared in an earlier post.
- talking to Ecowitt earlier they said they want to consider to offer such an extension as accessory - or even a new hardware revision. This was a few months ago.
What's the final result of the consideration and, if positive, how long it takes from the idea to a prototype and to production, I have no idea.

the Ecowitt reply:
"Concerning the funnel accessory part, it is a good idea, and I have been used this by myself with a simply made one.
I have passed this to our engineering team for their consideration. We should make it an accessory part, at least, available in case people need one. "

I'll try to find a local (if possible) 3D printing company and search for that file.

I never noticed rain bouncing out of my VP1 but that funnel was very big and the main funnel part inside started at the top and sloped down so anything which did bounce was likely to remain within the funnel but I have definitely seem rain bouncing out of my WH40, not often but we've had quite heavy rain in the past couple of days and I have seen it bounce out.

Interesting approach, think I would rather just have a new funnel as opposed to a piece sitting on the funnel. You can see gaps in the photo where the piece sits on funnel.

Well at least they have listened and are trying, this photo may be a pre-production model I have no idea if this is the final version.

I agree. It's a marked shift from their original stance, that a change in funnel would not solve the problem.
This led me to believe they had identified a problem with the tipping bucket mechanism.
That extension though, is way too short. The one Gyvate is testing should be considered the minimum height.

Does anyone State side have a company they recommend to print these?

Of course, then I wonder why the little Y wing doesn't need a funnel but what do I know.

It looks like a prototype to me as that is just a rough cut hence the gap(s)

For the moment I have found the solution to not underestimate the rain, with an offset to the rain gain of +0.25, practically it works like the manual rain gauge, but the solution to lengthen the cone must be done, we will see then if it will solve the problem, or however, it should be helped with a slight offset, [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

if you have a closer look at the WS69/WH65 funnel (it has a funnel but with a comparatively high rim !) , you will see that the slope is steeper in addition to the smaller surface covered => less loss by splashing during strong rainfall. For the WH40 not to lose rain through splashing off, the rim height extension is needed. The loss becomes even more when combined with strong winds.
I'm not saying that the WS69/WH65 doesn't have some such splash loss but significantly less due to its design.

As I collect more rain data testing this, I'm interested to know what tolerance you are willing to accept for the difference between your WH40 and your manual gauge readings, given the WH40 accuracy is ±5%?

a manual gauge showing small scale (line distance) 1.0 mm steps will give you a system(at)ic reading error of 0.5 mm (eye parallaxis)
so the error percentage decreases with the amount of collected rain.
A spoon tip of a WH40 is 0.1022 mm (imperial/metric conversion rounding error - with no calibration applied).
With such a setup, you will need bigger rain amounts per day to compare getting into an area/order of magnitude where the 0.5 mm reading error becomes neglegible.
Maybe it would be better to determine the manual reading by measuring its mass (weight) - empty and with collected rain.
Of course you will have to do some gauging measurements with different fillings (5, 10, 15, 20, .... mm) before in order to be able to convert the measured mass into mm rainfall (or correspondingly imperial units).

Don't forget you need the bird spike kit too.

The bird spike kit on my Y wing slides down after a month or so no matter how tight I make it.  I'm thinking it glue time.

Hope you also got yourself the bird spikes - unless you have them already - to fix the extension.
They never suggested any in the first place, with or without, but when you are using metric units (mm), you can apply a factor of 1.02 due to to-be-expected rounding errors in the conversion from imperial to metric.

Thanks I already have the bird spikes, but ordered an extra set to use up my points. Can't hurt to have. I think I am using 1.1 now or something close to that because it seemed to be under-reporting.
