Title: Looking for Beta Testers
Post by: doubleohwhatever on July 18, 2018, 04:50:33 AM
Hi All,

Hopefully it's okay to post this here as we're not selling anything (yet).

We're nearing the completion of a new weather map service and are seeking beta testers. We're not ready to announce many details but I've attached a handful of images and animations to show what our service will produce. This isn't going to be another weather API with ridiculous starting prices and it's not going to be the best thing since sliced bread and win awards. It's going to be a solid weather maps API with plans affordable for hobbyists.

We're looking for a maximum of ten beta testers to help us test and finalize the features we'll offer. Each beta tester will receive free access until the end of September and possibly longer if testing is extended.

The requirements are simple:
1) Be able to actually use the service (have a website or similar that could use weather maps).
2) Be proficient enough with coding to add the maps to your site. We recommend retrieving images in the background, storing them locally and then serving them on your site.
3) Be willing to provide regular feedback via a private forum. Daily feedback is not required. Once a week or so, etc.

Note: We're currently only generating data for the continental US. We plan on expanding to other regions later this year.

If you're interested, please leave a reply on this thread claiming a spot and we'll PM you with details within 24 hours.

We definitely have coverage in CA. I've attached another example map that is zoomed out to show our current coverage area. Again, we'll be extending coverage to other areas later this year.

I'm sending you a PM with the beta tester details.

Have been playing working with the maps.  Even I got a basic understanding of how and what map to display.

This is still in the early beta period and they are actively resolving issues as they occur, but looking very good.

Enjoy,
Paul

Sorry for the delay. I'm out of town at the moment.

We're currently working on upgrading to custom servers that will allow us to offer more global data. We expect to have some global coverage in place by the end of the month. I'll send you a PM once we have coverage in Australia :)

We'll be adding coverage for Europe in 3-4 weeks. At the moment we're transitioning to a new server architecture and then we'll be adding global coverage.

Yes, it's been a very long process getting this put together. The good news is that we plan on opening up the doors and launching a public beta sometime next week. Everything will be 100% free during the public beta period. Feedback and suggestions are more valuable to us than $ at this stage.

Our (100% free) public beta is now live: https://meteomaps.com

It literally is 100% free. No gimmicks. Feedback is what we're most interested in at the moment.

For those of you that signed up and didn't receive a verification email, that problem is now resolved and your accounts have been activated. Sorry for the hassle.

I've built several maps and quite easy once you get a feel for it.  Most difficult for me is understanding the many Data Layer content.

Enjoy,
Paul

That's unfortunately one of the drawbacks of having as many data layers as we do. We've added presets to the map builder that (hopefully) will help with this. If you haven't already, give the presets a try. The "Precipitation Type" is a favorite of mine.

For those that haven't stopped by in a while, we've added a new feature: Meteograms

This worked well when I first tried it.  But seems that selecting some elements, like Dew point (c), needs to be looked at.

Enjoy,
Paul

That should be fixed now. Thanks for pointing out that bug.

So your maps are clickable when I visit your web site under Features, but nothing comes up when I click them? Can you show me some real time screen shots, such as radar, a temperature map, a surface map with fronts and pressures, etc?

Hi Don,

There's a demo video on the front page. We'll improve the front site as we get closer to launching. For now, we're still in beta and everything is 100% free. So feel free to sign up and build a few maps. If you signup you'll find our map builder tool under the "builders" menu item.

As for some of the features you mentioned, the following are still on our to-do list:

Little bit of feedback, signing up now and don't like that passwords have to be alphanumerical and can't contain symbols.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't aware of that limitation and I can't really think of a valid reason for it. I'll make sure that gets fixed.

This is now fixed. Passwords can be changed here if you've already signed up:

I'm still not 100% sure why this limitation was in place but I went ahead and removed it myself instead of waiting on someone to get to it tomorrow or on Monday.

I would like to beta test
Sure thing. Just visit the site and signup for an account. It's all free at the moment. No credit card or anything like that required.

The biggest thing I'd like to see are the fronts and pressure systems on a surface map. This would sell me faster than most anything. I need that on a map when presenting to the public. Thanks.

Those two features are definitely on our list. At the moment we're working on custom city labels and storm tracks as those have been requested the most. After those two are complete we'll likely start on fronts and then keep moving down our to-do list.

I haven't been posting feature updates here for a while but we've had numerous people request this one and I know some are following this thread.

After a lots of testing we have finally enabled storm data for everyone. There's a more detailed post on the Meteo Maps forum but this is what the new feature looks like:

Next on our list is "overlay layers" which will include items like fronts, pressure lines, etc. This one will likely take a couple of weeks due to the complexity.

Hi All,

Our surface analysis data layer is now available. While this is a map that we wanted to offer, it's apparently not a map that is hugely popular. Even AccuWeather did away with theirs:
https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-blogs/weathermatrix/the-demise-of-the-surface-weather-frontal-map/70000589

We talked with a few of the people we consult with and the general consensus was that traditional surface maps can be too complex for "at a glance" viewing. With this in mind, we decided to create a less complex surface analysis map that will hopefully be more inviting.  As always, we love feedback. We also know that this map might need to be tweaked. So consider this "version 1".

Hi All,

We're working on a complete overhaul for our meteomaps.com service. We're to the point where we need to start switching aspects of the system from the old software and hardware to the new software and hardware.

Any maps currently configured and in use by users will remain active during the transition. However, the admin panel will be in a state of limbo for a bit and creating new maps will not be possible. We're hoping to have everything completed by the end of May.

Hi All,

For once for us, things are actually going to plan. We're well on our way having the overhaul complete by the end of this month.

At this point, the new admin panel is online and the service is quite usable. Please feel free to sign in and give it a try. Again, we're not charging at the moment. So it's all free to check out.

That was the case for the past couple of years. However, Meteomaps has recently been transferred to a new owner and I have no knowledge of their future plans for the site.
