CP210x USB to UART Bridge Install Problem
« on: January 09, 2010, 03:49:34 PM »
Now I am reaching out for some help.  If you have been following the forum lately, I had my VP2 sent away for repair for the past month and I just got it back.  The hardware all appears to be working.  That's the good news.  However, I cannot regain communications with the PC.  When I first had my problems back a month ago, I downloaded and installed the latest version of the CP210x USB to UART Bridge Controller as part of my troubleshooting.  This has become an issue today.

I am running both Weatherlink (5.7.1) and VWS at different times (no VPP).  At this point I am just trying to get WL going first.  To start fresh, I reinstalled the latest version of CP210x.  Fine.  When I plugged in the USB cable to the PC from the console, windows opens the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard"...this wizard helps you install software for CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller.  I said go ahead and it came back "hardware was not installed because the wizard connot find the necessary software"  Huh?  I just installed the CP210x.

When I look at the Device Manager, I see that the console is seen as an "Other Device" with the CP2102 below it.  When I select it it says the drivers are not installed.  I thought it was supposed to pick up the console (CP2102) in Device Manager under "Ports (COM and LPT)".

I have been looking at this all day now and I am getting weary.  I can't find any instructions for this so I don't know what is wrong.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oddly, sometimes the USB port used makes a difference. Try switching to a different one on the computer...

That's all I've got...

I tried two.  I think the problem still lies with the installation of the CP210x.  Even before I plug in the USB connector, shouldn't I see the CP210x in Device Manager under Ports?  Or will it only appear once I plug in the USB?

Thanks for the suggestion.  I am running 5.7.1 I think it has to be serial.  I don't think that option came out until 5.8.0?

The device will not appear until you plug it in.

I got it.  I found a post on the SiLabs forum that was my exact problem from 2004.  It went unsolved.  I figured there was no way I was going to solve this with the present configuration.  So I fixed it by upgrading my 5.7.1 to 5.8.3.  Rebooted.  When I plugged in the USB connector it found it as the ExpressUSB device.  I ran the conversion program in the Weatherlink menu to back serial.  And it worked.  Thanks to those who posted suggestions.

Dale,
See you back on WU and things are coming together again.  Congratulation on getting your station back and running again, and I see the shining light in your yard.

  Paul.

Dale,

I am having a similar problem. Can you post a link to the Silabs forum post so others can have a look.

Thanks

Try this link to update the driver "silabser.sys". It enabled the install of WeatherLinkUSB that I described on another post.

KG1ZR:

I can't seem to find the link directly to the forum posting.  You will have to go in yourself and search for it.

1) Go here: http://www.silabs.com/support/forums/pages/default.aspx
2) select "MCU User Forum"
3) Search for "CP2101".  The search link is really tiny but you will see it.
4) The post is titled "CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Port Controller Not Functioning" dated June 11, 2004.
