Can we presume that all of you folks who are having problems with 5.9.x, are reporting those problems to Davis?

Reporting the problems here is great - but it won't get the problems fixed.

I'm still trying to decide whether to report it to Davis or Tinplate @ SoftWx.   #-o  (Thus the poll I just posted.)  If this is truly a Virtual VP issue, reporting it to Davis would probably be little more then a waste of time.

Well, I got "yelled at" when I suggested it might not be a Davis issue - so I suggested reporting it to Davis.  But I'll stick my neck out and try to outline my reasoning.

First - any software program that's written to communicate with a port (serial, USB, whatever) has (by standards) the right to assume that it has exclusive access to that port.

Also, if new hardware is introduced (Vue, WeatherLinkIP, etc.), with new capabilities, there may be additional speed or timing issues that cause changes in the software - but the same rules apply.

So:  If:

1.  WeatherLink software works properly when it has exclusive access to the port.
2.  VirtualVP makes it look to WeatherLink like it has exclusive access to the port.
3.  New version of WeatherLink doesn't work properly when VirtualVP is used.

Earlier this morning I shutdown most of my uploads and other software (including Virtual VP) for an hour and tied WL 5.9.1 back in direct to Serial Com1.  I did get one "connection lost" error from WeatherLink 5.9.1 but that was the only issue.  The downloads were all fine with no failures.  I reduced my profiles down to run at one minute intervals rather then 15 during the test.  This put WL into nearly a continuous cycle of download and uploads for the hour given I have 5 profiles and upload numerous images.

So the download issue is something being aggravated by Virtual VP, but the connection lost error is something in WeatherLink they have changed.  For those of us using Serial connections, throwing a warning box is fine I guess but I still think it would be better if they would continue trying to reconnect in the background (providing that is possible).

As I get the chance later today I will report my findings to both Davis and Steve mentioning both issues to both of them.

Edit 2/22/2010 00:18:  Emails sent to both tonight.   ;)

Update,
As I mentioned in another thread, Steve replied back to me in the early morning hours (my time) of the 25th. He's still working to come up with a solution to the issues created by the tighter timing tolerances in WL v5.9x compared to 5.8.3 (thus the increase in downloading errors).

Still no word back from Davis.

Well, today I received an email from Davis asking me to rate the response I received on my email above sent to them back in February.  I never received a response until now.   #-o  At the same time I sent a third email in about as many years trying to get them to update my link on Weather World Round' and never received a response to that one neither.

I replied back including both of my previous emails though one is kind of moot now with the release of WL5.9.2.  Will see what happens this time..
