PC Always on for WU or CWOP? Software help
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:50:02 PM »
Dear All, I recently got my Davis VP2 up and running using WL USB and I am supplying my data to WU and to NOAA as part of CWOP.  Problem is I want to turn my PC off at night or certainly not worry about running it all the time.   Question - are there any of the aftermarket software packages that will backfill data to WU or NOAA during the times my PC is off (once powered back up) so the WU/CWOP records don't have gaps ?  I know WL IP can handle this problem but I have read about other issues with the logger.  Thanks in advance, Zephirus

WeatherLink should backfill WU data.

The structure of the CWOP system does not allow backfilling data.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply - Yep it does, just not when I look at the daily view.  I looked at the weekly view and it was filled in - Thanks !  Scott

What archive interval do you have your data logger set for?

No I am not using the software to shut down the PC - I think you are asking me if I am using Windows to do this?  My archive interval is every 5 minutes.  I have cable internet service.  Is using Weatherlink IP a good or better option?  I also have alot of disconnect issues with Weatherlink (USB) too.

A lot of people have had issues with the USB logger.  Best solution is to call Davis and exchange for a serial version.

Some people have found that Windows turns off the USB device after awhile to save power.  You can edit that device in the driver section and see if the advanced properties have the option to turn off power saving features for that device.

Others have found a different USB driver that helps.  But if those don't, Serial is your best bet.

I went out of my way to buy a new PC that still has the serial built into the mother board.  Of course, when I bought a VP1, serial was my only option.  I've decided to keep it that way.  BTW, the Dell Vostro 220 mini tower has serial still...

Thanks Merc,

Yea I have read about the USB issues I was just hoping the 5.8.2 revision would do the trick - guess not for all! I will look at those setting tonight.

I got rid of the USB logger and got an IP Logger which I really like.  It has been running since it was installed some weeks ago perfectly.  The best thing for me is I can run Weatherlink on my laptop from anywhere in the house and look at/work on weather data.  So I can recommend the IP logger as a great alternative.  The USB logger just did not stay connected.
