Weatherlink help, sort of.
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:44:50 PM »
I'm trying to help out my dad in Ohio. He has a WMII with WL 5.5 hooked up to a lap top. He used to have it hooked to a regular pc with the serial connection and it worked fine. When he tried to hook it up to the lap top there was no communication.
I told him to check each com port and hit the test button. Did that and still no luck.
By the way did I tell you he's computer illiterate.  ](*,)
Anyways I'm thinking the problem may be with the serial connection. The laptop has 2 USB ports so I was thinking a serial to USB adapter.
I obviously had him check to make sure a lines were connected.
Anything else you guys can think of?
Forgot to mention that he didn't know if the serial connection where he was plugging it in was for a phone modem. He couldn't tell if there was a phone icon by it.

Ah, was the Davis 4 pin modular to DB9 serial adapter on the end of the cable? Does the laptop have DB9 serial ports? Did he perhaps have the  Davis mod plug plugged into the modem jack?

Send him pix of all of the above to make it clear...

That's right. I completely forgot about the serial adapter.
Thanks Chris.

Ok, Davis sent him a new serial adapter. He bought the serial to USB adapter, but we still can't get it to communicate.
He did say he's using version 5.5. Would an upgrade to 5.7 or 5.8 maybe fix the issue?
He's also using Vista. Any idea's?

I wonder if Vista would be supported by ver. 5.5?  I can't recall now and Davis no longer has that old of a version listed.

Also wonder if the USB port could be turned off to save power since it's a laptop?

How old is the laptop? I've got one only a couple of years old, and I had to load new drivers for the card reader so it could see a 2GB SD--just wouldn't work otherwise.

Maybe you need to load new USB drivers in general for the laptop?

Sorry, I see that it's Vista, so it must be a new one...

and a ton of other stuff if you Google "vista usb problems"...

Turned out to be the drivers for  the USB adapter. He bought one that was already opened so it was cheaper. Turns out he could never get the drivers to load. Told him to return that one and get one for Vista. That did the trick. He DL WL 5.8 and is happy once again.

Grrr! Another problem.
On the bulletin screen with 5.8 from left to right across the top it should read:
Wind direction, temperature, humidity, and wind speed.
On the bottom it reads:
Current rain, barometer, and total rain.
On his version of 5.8 running Vista it reads:
Wind direction, temperature and wind speed.
On the bottom it reads:
Humidity, barometer and total rain.
There is no current rain? On his, the current rain is over next to total rain and the humidity is on the bottom left?
Does anyone else have a bulletin screen like this?
There's  another problem but I need to get this one answered first. ](*,)

Does he have the screen fonts enlarged or using a lower resolution like 640x480 to make it easier for him to see?

No Mark, none of the above.
I can't for the life of me figure out why his bulletin screen is different.
He has 55.56 under current rain. He wants to get rid of it but there is no anomaly in the browse screen or any of the graphs. So how would you correct that?

If the 55" is not showing on the console or any other screens except the summery, I would think something must have burped when he updated WeatherLink.  Wonder if he uninstalled / reinstalled WeatherLink if that would clear it and the visual alignment issue?

If he tries that make sure he watches to install it in the same directory as before otherwise his old station and records will not show up.  It might try to install in a different directory.  It did for me when I upgraded to 5.8.
