ordered upgraded Ecowitt 3501
« on: September 17, 2019, 05:49:53 AM »
Firstly thanks to Lucy at Ecowitt and Galfert on here.

I wanted a new station and liked the look of the 3501. But I didnt want the 3500 console. I wanted the hp2551C console.  Have to say Lucy has been brilliant and very accomodating, so after some chatting I have now ordered the following.   HP2551-C + 1X Indoor temperature & humidity & pressure sensor + 1X WH40 Rain gauge sensor,  plus Bird spikes + 1X WS68 Wireless anemometer + 1X WH32E Outdoor temperature and humidity sensor, GW1000 gateway.

Paid via Paypal.  After conversion to USD total cost was $344 which worked out at £292 including Fedex shipping.

When compared to the cost of a Davis that is very good - though I accept the overall quality will probably not be as good.

Having run my Vue for nearly 10 years now, I really do feel Davis have sat on their backsides and let the market catch up with them and in many ways surpass them.

The Vue will remain in use for a while.  The Ecowitt will be mounted higher and it will be very interesting to see how they compare!
Will keep you all informed.

We had a nice chat, you are welcome. What are your plans for the GW1000? Weather-Display software or Meteobridge?

EDIT: I should have said Weather-Display or Meteobridge or both? I run both off one GW1000. The neat thing about the GW1000 is that there is no limit to the number of software that can ask for the data via the local API.

Sorry Mandrake.  After Brexit Wales will become independent and you will be  one of "those over there"  \:D/   Only kidding as an Englishman myself.

As I look on the Ecowitt map, there aren't many of us are there!

I think there are plenty of folks using the WS1001 or Maplin variants and some of 2902 type sold by froggit (many of which might have the Ecowitt firmware) etc but very few about using the latest generation of fine offset weather stations actually from Ecowitt.
This is largely due to the fact that there are no retailers and most people are unaware of Ecowitt as a brand.
Hopefully one day Ecowitt will launch a marketplace on Amazon.co.uk as they do for Canada, USA and Auz and the brand will take off in the UK.

Hello All,

I have been happy enough with my Maplin N23DQ weather station that has performed well over the past 4 years. However the temperature readings have become erratic, which seems to be a common complaint with this unit. I have the version with the analogue sensors, and though it seems I could repair it, I do have a birthday coming up, so I am tempted by the Ecowitt range, specifically the Ecowitt HP3501. I like the idea of the separate anemometer as I want to move the outdoor sensors away from some growing trees. I'm not that bothered by uploading data, but I do like to display indoor and outdoor temperature changes as a graph, something the N23DQ does well. One obvious downside of the HP3501 is the small size of the display, but the lower cost means that I could have one display upstairs, and one downstairs connected to my computer via USB for data collection over time. To owners of the hp2551C console - can that give a graphical display of temperature? Does anyone know if two displays are possible before I email Lucy?

Thanks!

You can order a custom system. For example you can order the HP3501 sensors with the HP2551 display which is better in my opinion. And yes the HP2551 has all the graphs. What you won't have with the HP2551 display is USB to PC connection. But if you also add the GW1000 then you can get data over the network for various software like Meteobridge or WeatherDisplay using the local API. You can run other software like WeeWx without the GW1000 as the HP2551 has a "Customized Server" upload function that can send data to WeeWx with the Interceptor driver....but that doesn't include all the sensors. So using Meteobridge and Weather-Display does get you all the sensors as the local API method is better.

This is exactly the setup that ukwoody just got:

yes, you can have multiple consoles (they are receivers).
The HP2551 graph is pretty nice.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I would defo go with the HP2550/1 but then I am biased!
Crikes, my console is dusty!

If USB connectivity is important to you the you are forced to use the 3501 but I am not sure if anything other than Easyweather will work. The GW-1000 is definitely the future way to get data to other devices and software.

Incidentally the HP2550/1 has a SD slot which will store the data and you can perform regular backup to it so that's a route to exporting data via CSV files albeit crudely if you require.

Thanks Galfert and Mandrake, you may have swung it to the HP2551 with that graph. I love an indoor/outdoor graph plot - or a wind speed one! Its interesting to see the effect of a storm come and go on the wind speed. I suppose the ultimate for me would be an HP3501 display and its sensors, with an additional HP2551. I could put the HP3501 display in my study, next to my computer and to reduce costs slightly, forgo the soil moisture sensor for now, seeing as the transmission strength seems low on these. Its a shame my old Maplin N23DQ display will be redundant, but from other things I have read, I don't think it will work with the Ecowitt sensors.

Oh, and its odd how the Ecowitt website instructions for the HP2551 mentions nothing about graphs.....

The ecowitt.com website is not the best!

I would also add that don't forget with the HP2550/1 console you get uploads to Ecowitt.net which allows you to graph and observe all your weather data from a webpage.
Its very good and constantly evolving new features. So you are not limited to what you can see on the console graph. Indeed I never use the built in console graphs or data, just the ecowitt.net webpage to see my data.

The N23DQ display will not work because the wind speed will be off by a factor of 2x. This is because the new anemometer sends 2 pulses for every revolution and the old sensor only sends 1 pulse per revolution. Therefore the N23DQ will think that the wind is 2x faster. Every other sensor displayed will work on the N23DQ display. Unfortunately there is no fix in the N23DQ firmware to adjust for this wind calculation difference. The new anemometer was designed to send out 1 pulse for very half of a revolution to increase wind accuracy and to be able to detect lower wind speeds.

The HP2551 manual probably does not mention the graphs because it hasn't been updated. Originally the graphs weren't there. A firmware update a few months back brought this graphing feature. Ambient Weather's version of the HP2551 called the WS-2000 also does not mention the graphs, but on Ambient's website for firmware download log page it does mention the graphs when they were added and it says that it is a beta feature. The graphs seem to work well enough though. Besides being able to scroll through every sensor with the graph display you can also change the graph plotting interval to previous 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours.

EDIT: You know what I went to look at Ambient's site to find out exactly when the graphs were introduced and I no longer see it mentioned. They updated their firmware change log and it is gone! I remember reading it there though. I think it happened sometime late 2018 or Jan - Feb 2019. I still have graphs with the latest WS-2000 firmware though so they are there.

Can the WH51 soil moisture sensor connect directly to the HP2551 console or do you need to use the GW1000 Gateway? I'm close to a decision now, sticking with just an HP2551 console. I had a dig about last night, and I can calibrate the wind sensor on the N23DQ display. Its at a value of 1.0 at the moment, but even if it does connect to the Ecowitt sensors, I think I'd be lucky if a 0.5 value would make the wind speed reporting accurate (goes down to 0.1) - I don't suppose 'calibration' would be that coarse.

The WH51 soil moisture sensor connects directly to HP2550/1 and HP3500/1.
GW1000 is not needed for this.

Let us know how it works out with the N23DQ and wind adjustment with new anemometer. Other people have claimed it doesn't work. I don't have one so I can only go by what other people have reported.

Hello,

Could I have one more bit of advice please? I have unscientifically tested adjusting the N23DQ display via calibration with a hairdryer at 30cm indoors, and going from 1.0 to 0.5 does appear to halve the wind speed, so I might be able to use the console, fine tuning it to the HP2551 when I get it. The N23DQ operates at the 433MHz frequency, and I have had no problems with connectivity from the current array at the bottom of the (small) garden, though the house to the far corner in the bedroom. I have had a reply from Lucy about my order:

Dear X,

Thanks for your reply.
We have many other customers in the UK also use the 868MHz.
Please note that the 433MHz may not perform well in the UK.
Please let us know your thought.

Best Regards,
Lucy

Do I stay with the 433MHz, and hope that the array will talk to the old N23DQ - the old set-up works well at 433MHz, and I have a very comprehensive wireless burglar alarm (30+ sensors) which will be at 868MHz, and may cause interference?

If you are happy with the 433Mhz then go with it.
My old Maplin N96Y which is still somehow working after nearly 10 years service is some 30Meters down the garden and through several brick walls and works fine at 433Mhz

I still have my doubts that the HP2551 will see the old sensor array though.
The GW-1000 on the other hand I know will see it as they have a software switch for it.
However there is no harm in trying and to some extent a bit of experimentation is part of the experience. for you and us (if you post the results!)

As for 868Mhz interference, I too have many smart devices in the house (Honeywell) talking on the same frequency and they do not seem to cause each other any issues with my modern HP2551 and many sensors in the garden and house.

I think I’ll go for 433MHz, in the hope that the new Ecowitt sensor array will talk to my old Maplin display as well as the new HP2551. If it doesn’t, at least I know that if my old setup worked at 433MHz, the Ecowitt should too ...
