Gold Stars?
« on: June 01, 2020, 01:54:19 PM »
I've seen gold stars on a few stations in my area but I don't have any clue about them.

How do you get them? What do they do? I have a lot of questions!

If anyone would care to explain it'd be greatly appreciated!  [tup]

You have to be blessed by the WU fairy.

Forget the Gold Stars. They don't mean anything. WU implemented the Gold Star a few years ago and they have never *really* worked. Frankly I don't know why they even keep them around.

You can borrow mine.
And they *really* did work when introduced...

Enjoy,

The concept of designating a pws as one deserving of a “Goldstar” was an excellent one. That is, identifying reasonably reliable pws (I believe the criteria was having a minimum of 5 days of reporting without significant variations from a "norm" so to speak) so people could rely more on a pws with a Goldstar than pws without such a designation. Unfortunately, WU never really devoted the resources to the concept and now it is nothing but a joke. A Goldstar assigned to a pws comes and goes with no apparent reason.

It was on one of the worst stations in the area & that surprised me a little. I guess it's just a fancy meaningless badge then. Thanks all!

IMHO, I think that because they likely are doing their development on a production system that when they screw things up really good, they have to drop back a few versions, (doubt they make backups frequently), and re-introduce the coveted Gold Star purely by accident.

You are probably right! We have seen time and time again how changes get implemented on the live system and old problems that were already fixed come back like the wind direction spider and others like it.

My station has only been up for a month and a few days and I just got a gold star. So I guess this proves galfert's point at their apparent arbitrariness.

i quit worrying about WU many years ago. Yes, I send them data. I really do not care if I get anything out of it.

Mine came back...for a day.  Now it's gone again. I think they just have one they rotate between users.

I want my gold star!!!  Kicking and screaming.  We lost power here this morning due to Tropical Storm Ieais, or however it's spelled.  Normally, there are about eight stations showing around me and now there's only one, besides mine.  That other one, and I, deserve a GOLD STAR!!!!!   I want my GOLD STAR!!!!

I haven't sent data to WU in about three years after being there the five-ish years prior. Just for the hellofit, I log in a few months ago just to "see" if my PWS was even still available. It was...instant gold star and all.

I did a little looking around.  Of the eight local stations on the Wundermap pane, seven now have gold stars.  Once again proving the "value" of the gold star.

I was going to tell you not to jinx it....too late. But alas I saw mine return for a week or so before we started seeing lag times in out data ingests. Neener neener, I still have my precious gold badge of quality...whoops I’m probably jinxing it big time ;)

Very odd. My stations Gold star for my Acurite 5 in 1 came back after months of not appearing. My Acurite Atlas does not have the Gold star, but delivers almost exactly the same data!

I'd suggest getting a screen capture ASAP to memorialize that before it disappears again.

Yea and add it to your WUForum signature with "I had one of these once..."
