Title: It's FINALLY here! The new PWSweather.com website!
Post by: weatherforyou on February 17, 2020, 07:11:51 PM
Many of you have been waiting many months or even years for a new version of PWSweather.com.  Well the public beta of PWSweather.com is now available!  There are still some bugs to work out (especially with the ever troublesome precipitation).  But the team is committed to addressing the ones which have been found over the last decade or so.  You can link to the new site from the old one.  But the direct link is...

https://beta.pwsweather.com/

In the green bar at the top of the pages is a link to "Tell us what you think. >"  PLEASE submit any issues you see.

The new site not only includes PWSweather.com stations but also METAR and MADIS.  Also you can select overlays for radar, satellite and alerts.

Thanks for your patience.  We're hoping everyone thinks it was worth the wait.

I like the look, and after a bit of looking am able to get around quite well.Likely because it is beta, but noticed only one of my stations is currently showing - F2530I have two stations on the original PWSweather:KOMOKA D3930 which still has data showing from Jan 2011 (not showing on map)
KOMOKA2 F2530 which has data since March 2018 (showing on map)
Enjoy,Paul

Can you expound some on the "AerisWeather Contributor Plan"? I see this mentioned near the bottom of the beta home page. However, I don't see any details in FAQs or on the Aeris Weather site? Just wondering what the specifics of this plan are.

By the way, I really like the look of the beta site!

Viewing on "Edge" … Looks really nice, I like it. On IE, seems to be several problems, also doesn't render well on my mobile device...certain things look to be missing. Also need tenths on the temps in the tabular view. I know its beta so these problems should be worked out.

Looking very nice. Thank you for the great work. I see a lot to like.

As mentioned, I second request to display decimal degrees for temp and dew point in the tabular view.

Please also add tenths decimals to metric barometric pressure (everywhere).

There seems to be a bug in Daily Summary section, when you select graphs, then nothing shows up for that section.

Please add yearly summary graphs and tabular view. This is something that WU also took away. This is something that you have in the existing site.

It would be nice to see wind vane for direction and speed on map.

Please use the link at the top of the pages to submit your bug reports and other requests.  That way they get into our support system so we can track requests and responses and reply directly to you to let you know of work on the issue you report or if we need further information.  I can't guarantee what is entered in this forum will make it over to the PWSweather.com support system.

Yes, I'm using that link. The trouble is that attempting to click on the submit button after filling out the form and it results in a Captcha error. The problem is that there is no Captcha on the page visible to deal with.

I'm using Chrome on Android 9 Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablet.

Error:

Captcha verification failed. If you are not a robot, please refresh the page.

Atempting to refresh the page then clears the filled out form fields. Back to square one. Can't submit feedback.

I took a look at it and when I went logged out and went back to my original page it was messed up.  The map on the right side for my location is now all black.  No map.    This happens on my tablet and computers that didn't even access the beta page.  Also a large blue full page "greater than" sign on top of my original page so I had to scroll down to see my stuff.   I know it's beta but it shouldn't mess with the original page.

* Update - Maps started to work the following day

I sent in my comments.  Captcha said it failed first attempt, but submitted anyway for some reason.  After that, it seemed fine.  My suggestions are:
Include temperatures to the tenth of a degree, especially when looking at historical tables.
Include barometric pressure to the tenth of a mb too.
Include a way to view the historic table in a text only format.
Include an ability to switch times to 24-hour format.
Fix the typo for kilometres per hour.  It should be km/h, not kph.

Oh come on, IE??? Really? I don't think any new website should be developed to still support IE and its antiquated browser technologies. Adding IE support is a waste of effort as it is used by less than 2% of all web users. Adding IE support does not make financial development sense, besides it would just add bloat to a new website to keep supporting IE. I'd even argue that removing legacy IE code from any website can only make the experience better for all. Microsoft has long since abandoned IE in terms of new features. IE is currently only marginally maintained with just security updates for current Windows versions and it is a minimal effort.

If websites stop supporting IE then they help make the Internet a safer place for everyone. As this would force those still hanging on to IE to have to switch to something current and more secure.

It has been so long that I don't remember how long it took. I think just about any service I've set up to upload data has been pretty much immediate....less than 24 hours. CWOP is the only one that takes days for the whole process.

Data will appear within a few minutes after it is received.  There's no waiting period once a station is added.

I see you have the CWOP stations already is there any reason to also enable PWS on Cumulus?

If you upload directly to PWSweather then it will be more "live" (up to 1 minute uploads) as opposed to CWOP/MADIS which only updates every 10 minutes or more.

Also a direct PWSweather station will receive SLP (if you set it for that) and a MADIS station will show Altimeter pressure.

I've created a Trello issue tracker board. This Trello board is unofficial.

Please continue to submit bugs or feedback directly to PWSweather using their website.

Any issue submitted on this forum or via the unofficial Trello board will not necessarily make it to PWSweather for consideration. The purpose of the Trello board is to have a place to see all the issues that users have hopefully also submitted directly to PWSweather. I encourage users to vote on the Trello card issues to show enthusiasm for a given feature to be fixed or added. Who knows maybe PWSweather will take notice and expedite resolve.

We don't monitor the issues with Weather Underground too closely,  mostly not at all.  But we will respond to the issues you bring to our attention in a timely manner.  Everything that has been brought to our attention is already on the list of one or more developer.  Some things have already been corrected, some will be within the next couple of weeks, some things will take more time.  And we will continue to be as responsive as we have since we started almost 20 years ago which, from what we hear, is better than other sites.

Should I stop uploading to PWS Weather and just keep my MADIS station uploading? It seems weird to have two dashboards for the same station, in addition my MADIS dashboard seems to be more accurate (no pressure inaccuracies). The only downside to that is the CWOP updates can only be 15 minutes, as compared to PWSWeather where I am updating every 5 minutes.

Not true. I've been sending 5 minute updates since day one, and that was about eight years ago.

I forgot that I actually am updating in 5 minute intervals now that I have a meteobridge. It is just my MADIS dashboard on PWSWeather that seems to be updating at 15-30 minute intervals. If that gets resolved, I'll stop uploading to PWSWeather so I don't have duplicate stations.
Title: Re: It's FINALLY here! The new PWSweather.com website!
Post by: galfert on February 22, 2020, 05:59:32 PM
I also upload to CWOP every 5 minutes. But PWSweather only pulls MADIS data between 15 to 20 minutes delayed. Much the same thing as what happens with Windy.com where uploading directly is more current and supports more features.

One difference I've noticed is that only with direct upload can you send both solar radiation and UV index. This is because CWOP only supports solar radiation.

I haven't inspected all the possible advantages to uploading directly, but one other difference right now is that my PWSweather data goes back over a year and MADIS data on PWSweather doesn't. Could be that this is only because they only now started pulling that data in but we also don't know going forward how much MADIS history there will be.

There are probably other differences that I've missed.

Also going forward I think there will be other advantages of a direct upload vs MADIS. Look in my Trello board for hints, if any of the proposed changes are accepted. Which by the was as of today is finally open for user comments (sorry I had a user posting permissions settings problem I missed).

If you think there are errors in your data on PWSweather.com please submit a support ticket.  Now is the time the developers are working these things out.

When you send your data to PWSweather.com it can also be displayed on WeatherForYou.com with credit.  Not all MADIS data is displayed there and it won't have credit to the contributor.

I'm referring about MADIS history on PWSweather. We are discussing direct upload to PWSweather vs what PWSweather is pulling from MADIS.  What shows up on Mesowest is not relevant. I've edited my previous post to make it more understandable.

If no data has been received from a station it can be deleted by submitting a support request.  If data has been received the station is kept in the system so any data received is available for research and/or educational purposes.

Aeris support has responded promptly to two issues I reported involving the new PWSweather beta site.  I noticed that on my 9.7 in. Ipad, the Daily Summary graphs did not display when I held the tablet in the horizontal position, but did display in the vertical position. Tony at Aeris support confirmed the problem was with the smaller 9.7 in. IPad (OK on 10.2 in. version apparently).  A fix has been made, and the graphs now show.

The second problem has to do with the 36-hour forecast temps not agreeing with the forecast temps in the full forecast.  Apparently the 36-hour temps are daily averages rather than high/low.  That issue is scheduled to be fixed in the next week.

I’m looking forward to using the new site when it’s officially launched.  PWSweather and WeatherForYou provide some very helpful and reliable services for the weather station hobbyist.

Not wild about the site but I will admit that support got back to me very promptly.

I created a support ticket and my PWS now shows up on all of the related sites.  They were very prompt and friendly about it, too.

I have to little things that need fixing, which are probably website code issues.  First, the PWSweather beta site is putting me in the wrong town.  There needs to be a way to fix that, especially since the WeatherForYou and "old" PWSweather sites have it correct.

The other thing is I would like my PWS to be the source of the current conditions on the WeatherForYou forecast page.  The observations it uses (Midway airport) are as much as an hour old.  I know this isn't really a PWSweather site thing but while you're in there... ;)

Don't believe this has been mentioned but, maybe do some work with the graphs....Like the old style much better...especially on mobile.

I had heard last week that this week we would be seeing some updates to some issues raised. Here we are mid day on Friday and nothing.

I was just excited and hopeful is all. I suppose waiting till things are right is more important than rushing out fixes without testing.

Just want to give some words of encouragement to PWSweather that I and I'm sure others like what we see so far.

Actually there have been quite a few updates pushed out in the backend.  They're not always that visible in what the public sees but are making a difference in how the data is processed.   ;)

Also be aware responses to reports are being directly responded to through the PWSweather.com support system.  We can't guarantee updates will be posted here.  Every support request submitted has been directly responded to and followed up on when necessary.

I submitted another bug found to PWSWeather:

There is a problem on how PWS historical data has handled the change to Daylight Saving Time.  All data from before the time change is shifted ahead an hour as though it was always DST.

I just wanted to say that having used this for several days I'm really liking it.  If we can get the city thing cleared up it'll be perfect for what I need it for.  The "old" PWSWeather site has it correct...

Please continue to work on the graphs...resolution needs to be better and appearance also...like the original graphs.

Agree, I gave up on PWS weather a long time ago because of this issue.  I aways had rainfall double counted. Doesnt look like that has changed.  Also, cant really dig into the data well.

Have you submitted a support ticket about this within the past month or so?  Getting the rainfall correct is one of the big things being worked on.  As many reports from as many people are needed to make sure something isn't missed.  All support tickets are being evaluated and responded to by the developers.

I submitted a ticket last year.  The person assisting me was kind enough to change a lot of my historical data (I sent them a list of probably 25 dates where rainfall was incorrect).  Those changes remain intact, but the issue just kept occurring afterwards.  And it appears with the new site nothing has changed.

I use Wifilogger to upload data.  WU, Davis, CWOP...all of those sites show my correct data.  I assume with PWS it has something to do with daylight savings time.  Certain dates have back to back identical rainfall.  I can submit another ticket if that helps you all.

I haven't noticed this issue of double rain on days back to back. I wonder if the problem is the WiFiLogger implementation of the PWSweather protocol.

I know a little about the the PWSweather protocol. It supports the same protocol as WU. The WU protocol has two ways of sending data. The data can either be dated (time stamped) or is can be un-dated as in "now" for that data being sent. Perhaps some implementation of either of these methods is failing at one end or the other. Or maybe the real time clock on the WiFiLogger is the problem.

I'm not claiming to know what exactly the issue is. I'm just providing this information to serve as a tip for others to follow. I will alert Wojtek to also look into this.

Could be the case, not sure.  I have a feeling that it has something to do with daylight savings time and the 24 hour rainfall stamp being put on the wrong day, thus causes back to back rainfall on two consecutive dates.  For reference, below is the time settings on my WifiLogger.

I also use the wifi logger to send data to PWS. Have never had an issue with rainfall.

I do believe that can be WiFiLogger fault.
Time is being read on startup and when NTP time is synchronized.
So for a few hours there can be shifted time.
I will solve this by synchronizing time much more often. Every 1 hour console will be read.
It will be 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 etc.
There will be no such problem any more

Thank you Wojtek!  [tup]
I guess my hunch was right.
But why not change the upload method to not send a time stamp?
Use  &dateutc=now instead of time stamp.
Using that method then the PWSweather servers gives the recieved data the time stamp of when the packet was received.
Then you don't have to worry about the real time clock in the WiFiLogger. I mean you can if you want sync with NTP more frequently but it isn't necessary for this current issue.

I do believe that can be WiFiLogger fault.

Data point:  I upload using Cumulus 1 and have never had that issue.

Also, the beta PWSWeather site is now down so I guess the new one is "official".

PWSweather has begun working on the updated interface for managing your station. Expect the new UI to match the current look of the new site. These changes should hopefully occur soon. I got this information from communication with their support staff.

It will probably look similar to this illustration on their site.

Compared to the current old UI. Shown here for historical reference.

Details of old interface (sorry no screenshots of new UI station details for this for comparison):

Give this a bump.
Graphs are terrible. Higher resolution would be better.

Don't know if anyone has noted this yet, but it appears that the precip for "nearby stations" is always 0.00. I only noticed this because I was playing around with their API and getting back zeros for my local station - when I had (rare this spring) rain today. If you click on an individual station's dashboard, the precip number is correct, but for all of the listed nearby stations, it says 0.00.

Edit: I have submitted this issue, both for pwsweather and for the API.

What I have noticed is that Nearby Stations do show rain but only accumulated amount within the last hour. When the new PWSweather site first launched the Dashboard for any given station also behaved this way and I didn't like it. It basically never used to show daily total.. instead it only showed hourly rain. This was changed a month afterwards for the Dashboard and it clearly still reflects that as the Dashboard now does say Precip Today. I have documented this below on how it used to be. So glad they changed this.
https://trello.com/c/j1Jeh6Hk

Therefore I believe that the Nearby Stations precipitation is still unfortunately working and displaying this other type of rain amount which is hourly rain.
Example of this working, which I think in my opinion would be better if it were changed to daily rain:
