Soil Temperature & Water Temperature Sensor Pictures
« on: August 27, 2020, 05:34:51 AM »
I contacted Lucy concerning information about the upcoming soil temperature sensor & received this response:

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for contacting.:)
Here's the price and picture information:

Soil temp sensor: 20.4USD/unit without shipping cost included

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Water temp sensor: 19.6USD/unit without shipping cost included

Best Regards,
Lucy

I thought the soil temperature sensor was called WH34 but by the looks it's WN31?

The soil temperature sensor does look about 4 inches long but I may inquire about the exact height soon.

I've had a response back from Lucy, full of information:

The length of the soil probe is 30 cm.
The length of the water temp cable is 3 m.

Model names:
Soil temp sensor - WN34AS(868MHz)/WN34BS(915MHz)/WN34CS(433MHz)
Water temp sensor -  WN34AL(868MHz)/WN34BL(915MHz)/WN34CL(433MHz)

Hi!

In the pictures above it looks like the soil probe can be screwed on.
The water sensor seems to be missing a connector - the cable seems to be connected directly to the PCB.
Can anybody confirm this?
That would be pretty stupid, it prevents the exchange of soil probe for water sensor.

Hi

Any updates on these especially on the soil probe re:ETA of availability? I may have missed it, but was it noted somewhere if the (soil) probe can be left in the ground outdoors year-round? I'm not sure but my the looks of it it's not IP-rated. Maybe a protective cover over it to protect it from the elements.

This will be perfect for the lawn (and garden).  =D>

Thanks

The body of the WN34 is IP rated and the water probe or the soil probe attach to a common body.
I am not sure what the delays are but hope to have some test samples soon.
Will update when I know my devices are on route.
Ecowitt seem to be pretty busy right now.

I've asked if there is any progress.
Last I heard earlier in the year was that they were having some trouble with the IPX rating (i.e. ensuring that the casings stayed water resistant)
Obviously that's a fairly important factor in a external sensor so we will need to be patient for this to be concluded satisfactorily.
When I know more I will update here.

That's interesting.  In the bottom picture, Lucy has the Chinese symbol for "wood" on her thumb (mu'), formed naturally in her knuckle creases.  木
Wood is one of the 5 elements theory in Chinese philosophy.  (sorry for being totally off-topic)

A little more information on the soil and temp sensor.
It really is nearly ready for those keen and waiting!
It is planned to be listed on the website by Easter and I should have a review of both as soon as possible (transit delays permitting).

I have the manual for the WH34
It states the following for info

Power: 1x1.5V AA battery(not included)
Sensor type: Epoxy Sealed Thermistor of NTC
Frequency: 433 / 868 / 915 MHz depending on
location (North American: 915 MHz; Europe:
868MHz; Other areas: 433MHz)
Wireless transmitting range: 100M (300feet)
Sensor reporting interval: 77 seconds
Sensing temperature: -40~60 °C(40~140 °F)
Cable sensor length: 3m(10ft)
Probe sensor length: 30cm(11.81inch)
Battery life: 12 months minimum
Waterproof level: IP65

No mention of accuracy so I have asked for that to be clarified

I have the manual for the WH34
So is the sensor finally called WH34 instead of WN34?
Thanks for all the good news!

I think we can assume that WH and WN34 are interchangeable.
The manual says WN34

According to their (Ecowitt) own latest internal definition - which they don't seem always to follow themselves  - or which they still need to get used to - the "N" stands for a weather station/sensor without solar panel.
If you want to apply this to the existing sensors, quite a few would lose their "H" for a "N".
But with the 34 and 35 series they try to be consistent.

Hi!

If you can't wait for the WN34 and need a 868MHz sensor for the pool you could use the Froggit DP30.

Actually I have a GW1000BU 915 MHz wifi gateway.  I see that there is an 'Ambient Weather WH31P Water Proof Thermometer Probe Sensor' on Amazon which is 915MHz.  Would this work?  If so, how will it appear in the WS View app and on the Ecowitt.net site?

Thanks,

We have it there as "water temperature sensor multi channel".
I guess Ambient chose the "P" for Pool  ;) - but you can use it anywhere. I use it to check the temperature in my freezer.
And it's just another member of the WH31 family, i.e. there will be max 8 such sensors shown per console.
They/it will show on ecowitt.net as WH31 Chx (x = 1-8), unless you rename it on the tile.

My latest understanding is this should be ready before the end of April. Not clear what the latest issue has been as I was expecting it to be available end of March, perhaps a manufacturing delay.
When its released and I have some samples on the way I will let folks know.

I got a response from Ecowitt.  It will be available 'soon'.  Anyway I used the Ambient sensor and it works fine.  Now I just need to find a place to put it permanently in the pool.
