Title: The new NWS radar site was implemented today
Post by: Mabcmb on December 17, 2020, 02:56:59 PM
Don't know if this is the place for this but I'm sure it will be moved if it's not . From the NWS " PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT! The new NWS radar site was implemented today, just in time for the "rain". Our 1990s radar pages are finally gone! Goodbye Flash, hellooooo GIS.. For more information and tips on how to use all the fancy new features, visit "   https://www.weather.gov/radarfaq

Link direct to the new radar site is here : https://radar.weather.gov/#/

  Have a great day , Michael .

And, the new site has now broken two scripts that depend on images no longer produced:

Base-USA template scripts:

USA-regional-maps.php Version 1.00 - 10-Jun-2020 now has no image for NWS regional radar composite

wxnwsradar.php (and support scripts, based on gwillkin's wxradar-hanis3.php script set) now has no images to display.

I'm working on fixes for both...

Thanks, Ken!  Meanwhile I've modified my web site to eliminate those images that are no longer available and scripts that are dead.  I could have used this animation (https://radar.weather.gov/ridge/lite/KOAX_loop.gif), but the display isn't at all up to what we had before.  A truly sad state of affairs!

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to your updates!

NOAA's new weather looks terrible.   It is significantly lower resolution than what they have provided.

Why?

Hey, it's a government 'service' in the truest sense of the word...

wxnwsradar.php (and support scripts, based on gwillkin's wxradar-hanis3.php script set) now has no images to display.

I'm working on fixes for both...

FYI, there are radar images now at https://radar.weather.gov/ridge/lite/

The regional radars are gone.   The national radar used to be big & beautiful - it is now a tiny 600 pixel image.

I've done an update to USA-regional-maps-inc.php V1.01 - 17-Dec-2020 to use the available images at https://radar.weather.gov/ridge/lite/

Sadly, only Alaska and Hawaii regional images are now being produced (along with individual NEXRAD sites 10 images and loop), so the script now defaults to using your local radar (specified in $SITE['GR3radar']) for the 'regional' image selected.  Best I could do with what little they now offer.

Update from the update tool (https://saratoga-weather.org/wxtemplates/updates.php) using query Base-USA, Plugin-*, 17-Dec-2020

It looks MUCH more bleak for the wxnwsradar.php set of scripts .. while there are images available, all the overlays are now not available, so I'd recommend you comment out a link to wxnwsradar.php (which stopped working 17-Dec-2020) in your flyout-menu.xml for now.  Maybe Jerry and I can resurrect that script (or replace it with some others using map software instead).
Sigh...

I haven't used NWS products in years and looks like that won't change. I much prefer getting everything here.

The Terms of Use https://weather.cod.edu/terms/ for their site allow limited sharing, but warn against overusage, so I think it's likely not appropriate to use them as a source for a generally-available personal website script set.  Thanks, though, for the link.

Why?
No it's not lower resolution. It's L2 data. The best there is. Compare it with L3 data and you'll see the difference.
The reason it looks so bad is the choice of colors they used. If they kept the original color scheme it would be getting better reviews. Something tells me they will eventually change the color table to something more appealing.

It may have the best quality source data, but the end result is a product that looks terrible.    The product human eyes saw yesterday was much higher resolution.

All this shows is big blotchy patches of brown.

My backup radar GIF is WU's Radblast on my front index page.

Adjust locations just change the OAX to your local radar site.

Indeed, that works well, Randy.  Just had to replace the '&'s with '&'s to get it to validate.  It's far better than the webcam image I was using that goes dark at night like my avatar does.

Here's Randy's (ValentineWeather) WU Radar for your location: https://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=APX&brand=wui&num=18&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&showlabels=1&severe=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&smooth=0

I like this better than the craptastic current NOAA/NWS offerings.

I suspect that the NOAA/NWS's goal in all of this machination is to reduce the load on their servers.  Nevertheless, I thought that their mission was to keep us informed by sharing their data and images.

But if they haven't updated their */lite/* images since yesterday, this lends even more credence to that idea.  They are pushing us off of their servers onto third parties' servers which render the images themselves from the raw data, and such rendering is way above and beyond my meager skill-set.

So WU and Allison House it is...

MUCH higher load on my browser end.  MUCH heavier.  Used to only load the local site, now wants to load the entire nation map even if only zoomed in local.  VERY poor choice.

And to top the mistake off, they STILL don't give you a national mosaic.

I get a blank Michigan map, but no radar data. It was working at first. The ping loop in the 'lite' directory for KAPX is the same, so it must be a NWS issue.

Where exactly do I place that WU alternate so it shows in the left side? https://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=APX&brand=wui&num=18&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&showlabels=1&severe=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&smooth=0 (https://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=APX&brand=wui&num=18&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&showlabels=1&severe=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&smooth=0)

For those that want to find the WU image manually/standalone, go to WU. Search your city.  Under the map, there is Wundermap and Nexrad.  Click on the NexRad.
On that graphic, hit the play button so that the image is moving.  Then below that, there is a "Save Image".  That will pop up another window with the graphic and it's address.
You can play around with the options like rain/snow, how many frames, etc.  Then hit the Save Image again with all those options.

I'm really disappointed in the NWS.  I can't believe they rolled out a product like this when the operational issues were still so apparent in the public beta phase.  It actually does more harm than good to public weather awareness.  I've given my feedback, and I suggest you all do too if you have a moment.  They have an email account set up for feedback specifically regarding the new RIDGE2 page.

Give them a buzz at nwsradarfeedback@noaa.gov.

Folks:
I have to agree with many of the comments made on this post. The NWS Radar redesign leaves a lot to be desired. The images take too long to load and the color choice for the radar data is just plain bad.

How is this an improvement for the NWS?  #-o
The lack of regional radar images and loops is also a significant shortcoming. Regional images would allow for faster page loads if coded correctly. As of now all National Radar info has to load before the web page is usable, that is hardly an improvement so zooming in won't achieve faster page loads.

I have minimized reliance on NWS Radar for my website to avoid these issues. The impression I am getting here is this is what the NWS wants, so much for serving the public.

Hopefully the NWS will rethink their role in providing user friendly products which are payed for by us taxpayers.

Regards,

That's the impression I'm getting too.  It feels like they're moving away from public information towards providing strictly raw data, pushing the public towards 3rd party providers to get their needs met.  I really hate to drag this thread in a political direction, but could this be a result of the private sector lobby and corporate America trying to steer policy in NOAA/NWS?

Anyway, carry on.

They have shown that with several changes over recent years.  To say more about why would cross 'rules' here.

Alternative to "new" NWS radar. I find this one much quicker to load and much sharper image.

Just a thought.

With the WU Radblast down and browsers not supporting flash anymore, we don't have many good alternatives except links. The Ridge lite Gif loop is a good idea but the script for my local radar was always 30 minutes behind so removed it. I'm using the GRLevel3 images for local radar on the front index page until the Radblast comes back online.  Upped the page refresh to 4 minutes so it's up to date.
