Ethernet Logger
« on: April 30, 2021, 08:51:26 AM »
Hi

I am finishing work with Ethernet Logger.
I need to ask people (this mean You) about some preferations.
I will post multiple photos in this topic and questions about it.
First introcuction:  Ethernet Logger is very similar to WL IP.
Main features:
- Export weather data to WeatherLink®.com
- Export data to WeatherUnderground.com
- Export to custome server using PHP&MySQL.
- All exports with 1 min interval, no RapidFire.
- Robust connection with PC software on TCP port 22222. WeatherLink PC, Cumulus etc.
- RTC with battery backup
- Console is not losing batteries in case of AC power down. Ethernet ability is not working without power, but batteries are for console and logger memory only.
- power: Davis AC adapter/ Davis USB cable/ USB-C cable

First question:
Should I rotate telephone cable?
I can use other kind of RJ11 socket, then cable will not have to be twisted.
With short cable it could be important, but I was thinking about 15-20 inches cable in set with Ethernet Logger.

Problem:

Current version:

Can be like this:

Another thing.
Ethernet socket goes beyond PCB. It is solution for example box.
I am not planing to have a box for it, but Davidmc36 (WX member) made one using 3D printer.
Should I make RJ11 socket with the same style?

Maybe, but if I bought one of these I would probably clip or Velcro the unit to the back of the console, then the twist would not matter (or could be beneficial, I'd have to think about it).

There is also another idea. Bottom plate of the cover can be little longer like 1/2 inch from each side. On the ends there can be holes for wall mounting.
With wall mount option twisted cable can be not helping.

I have a photo of bad wider (not longer) version. Please check:

I like the one with the solid top.
Solid top, with maybe the extended bottom one for mounting?

This is old wide version. I would like to make bottom board longer with also holes for srews for wall mounting.
Longer veraion will be better looking.
2 screws will be far enought.

If I wanted to put it in a box I think leaving the RJ11 connector flush with PCB would allow a cover without slots to slip over the RJ45, protruding through the box, and the RJ11 remains just below surface of printed box with precision sized and placed hole for wire connector.

I think the RJ11 need not be flipped over. Go for the Solid Top and one could mount it with velcro or two sided tape using whichever orientation suits the chosen position. Include the 15-20 inch cable and some like me with all the connectors and crimp gear will make custom lengths for anything that is more unique than that length will accommodate. 15-20 is good for most I bet.

I would prefer nothing extended on the bottom board. But I have the printer to make any solid mounting device I want.

(Maybe I should whip up a box that will attach to the kickstand and proffer for sale Tee Hee Hee)

If you did extend bottom board, longer would be best I think. Stays in line with Station and Network wires and keeps it narrow.

I like the idea of the longer cable between the logger and the console.  Then the orientation of the RJ11 wouldn't be a concern.  I also think that the cover with the jack protruding thru the top makes it seem like a much smaller package and would prefer that.  It seems like it could still be easily mounted even with the smaller cover plate by using the base plate as a mounting area from adhesive of some sort.  Or even go with the wider base and the top plate with the jack protruding.  Just my opinion on it.

I personally can't wait for these to become available.   I am limping my PC along long enough to get a ethernet logger for my station.  I will most likely run cumulus on a raspberry pi also with it.  I am unsure about the weatherlink live just yet.  Thank you for developing a product like this.

The Ethernet Logger will be just what you need.

I set up WeeWx on a Pi and it picks up the Logger with ease. Many options in that respect.

Sleek setup with one power source for Logger and Console.  [tup]

I am excited to get my hands on one.  Can I assume that scaled instruments will be the place to get one in the US?

It is already sent to Ryan from Scaled Instruments.
I do believe it will be next week, but sometimes custom can delay package for a week.

This look like very nice product! Nice and simple design!
I have couple of questions, how long can logger save weather data to it's memory in case of power outage? And is there option to use multiple weather programs to read data simultaneously?
Is there coming any reseller to Europe, since Brexit, you have to pay import taxes when ordering from UK?

Please remember that UK VAT is deducted from the cost of orders despatched from the UK to EU countries, ie these orders are shipped tax-free. So you only pay tax once (in your own country) and the cost is less (by the 20% UK VAT markup) than shown on UK pricelists, plus EU shipping. Orders are often arriving to EU customers within 2-4 days, shipped via UPS.

I have no intention of changing the seller. ProData is a very professional company, they are also hard working to help clients.

Any data logger in Davis console has to have the same capacity, because console can recognize only one particular memory chip.
What is more, if there is no such chip in Extension bay, then console will simply does not enable communication.
Quote
Archive Storage Capacity (the amount of time before the archive is completely filled):
1 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 42 hours
5 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 days
10 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 days
15 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 days
30 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 53 days
60 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 106 days
120 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 213 days

You can enable export to WeatherLink.com account. It will work like WL IP.
From WeatherLink.com you can download then same like from logger but x4.
Logger has 2560 entries, WL.COM has 10 240 entries.

Read data simultaneously  - this is called Virtual Console, and Ethernet logger does NOT!!! have it.
My intention was to deliver very similar robust solution like WeatherLink IP was.
I have little different design, but:
- My solution do not drain console batteries. Console can work on batteries for 3 months, not 3 days.
- My solution do not make any extra heat inside console like it is with WL IP, or WiFiLogger.

If you like to have it working like WeatherLink IP was working, then you have to make WeatherLink.com account, generate DID and KEY for new station and put it into Ethernet logger setup. I am very sorry that I can't deliver already set device, but DID and KEY is assigned to clients WL.COM account.

That's true, I would still prefer to order from EU, but have heard only positive from Prodata so ordering from there is not a problem.  [tup]
Is there any ETA date when orders opening?

I'm pleased to say that we do have an initial batch of stock now. It should appear on our online shop next week, but any non-UK customers (eg from the EU) should email sales@weatherstations.co.uk with your enquiry and include the exact shipping address please (this can affect the shipping cost - we need more than just the country). We can then answer any questions and send you an individual Paypal invoice if you wish to go ahead with a purchase.
