Topic: Best current software for most reliable uploads to CWOP/APRS

I'm currently run VWS/aprs software to upload to my data using the the cwop/aprs.net w/ port 14580 and been having lag issues of data posting on cwop and madis site(s) by 15 min or more minutes even though the software has said it is sending packets at even intervals. Any ideas out there?

Depending on what brand / model of weather station you have will determine which current software options are compatible with what you have. So what weather station do you have? And what logger do you have if applicable?

That said the reliability of the software often comes from the host operating system. A Linux system is often better designed to be more reliable and have more uptime. A Linux system does not need to be complicated even if you have no Linux skills. There is plenty of help on this and other forums to get going. All the current weather software run on Linux and it is common to do so using a Raspberry Pi because they are energy efficient, small, easy to work on, reliable, and affordable.

The common software options are; Cumulus MX, Meteobridge, Weather-Display, and WeeWX. Depending on your station there could be some other options. Some of these are free and some are paid.

If you are dead set against ever having to learn any Linux, to install or update the software or to update the operating system, then one option stands out as running on Linux but also not requiring you to know any Linux. This option is Meteobridge because it gets installed as an appliance, which only requires you to copy an image file and you could do that in Windows or Mac and you are done. Pop it in and it upgrades and just runs forever and all is managed via a web interface. But although Meteobridge is great, you should not discount the other options because they are all great in some way. I like them all, so I run them all. They each satisfy something different that they do and it makes each special. It isn't difficult to run any of them.

I noticed in the last week or so that my CWOP uploads are lagging as well. I don't think it is on our ends. I use meteobridge.

CWOP is a rather complex network of weather systems. When you say that CWOP is lagging it is important to say where it is lagging. Is it lagging in FindU? Or is it lagging to some other MADIS ingested network?

But also there are two sets of CWOP servers. If you are a ham, then you might be using the ham dedicated servers and they could be experiencing issues and the standard non-ham servers may be okay....or the other way around. Therefore it is also important to specify which set of CWOP servers you are using.

Also Gladstonefamily.net is not CWOP. Any delays there are just a problem with that site getting data.

I'm running Meteobridge to upload to CWOP and I've not seen any lagging at FindU (raw data). I use non-ham servers.

Here is another thought at least as how it pertains to the Meteobridge uploading to CWOP. In the Meteobridge the CWOP upload settings have an option for retries. I have mine set to 2 retries with a 5 minute upload interval. This ensures that if the receiving CWOP server is unresponsive that the Meteobridge will attempt the upload again before the next 5 minute interval. Because of the way the CWOP servers are defined, using a single address that corresponds to a group of servers, you'll likely get a different server on the next upload try.

I don't know if this particular feature is available in other software (maybe even behind the scenes to the user). I think it is a great feature to have.

I don't expect that you will solve this problem with VWS.

Average delay: 8.72 Minutes
But with a high standard deviation: 5.9 (you want standard deviation to be 0 to show consistency)

The retry is triggered by a failure to reach a working server. Therefore a retry is not an increase in server load. Most upload failures are probably due to DNS round-robin name resolution resulting in using a server IP address that is not operational. Or that server was incapable at that instance of processing the upload request. Either way you are not increasing the server load by a retry. I suppose there could be some special circumstance where the server does get your upload data attempt and in suffers some internal error that causes it to reply that there is an error, but I think this is a low possibility. Regardless I would think that a failed attempt should not count. A retry should only be attempted if the upload fails.

My WL throws out "Error, waiting for response from the APRS host" then what ever IP # it couldn't hook to and moves on to the next until successful (gotta love robots). In the last 45 minutes, I have 5 of them, kinda annoying, but as long as it eventually goes out, oh well.

Why? What good is a PWS that is unable to send data to a site that wants it?

I get the argument point...don't overload servers with upload requests and only send data at no more than 5 minute intervals. But my point is that 9 out of 10 times the issue is not on the part of receiving server, it's going to be a DNS issue whereby no CWOP server even gets touched. Therefore I say retry until you reach a working server and then start your 5 minute countdown until the next upload.

If it really mattered they would crack down of poorly written software that allows less than 5 minute uploads. And they should go after the users that also do this deliberately. I'm all for doing the right thing. But you need to at least attempt to police your network. I've confronted individuals that have needed help when besides their software or computer issue I notice that they are uploading every 1 or 2 minutes and believe it or not I was told to go pound sand. Unbelievable how rude some people are after I just helped them with another issue. Good thing most people are not like this. But it's happened twice.
