5n1 Wind Vane Prone to breakage?
« on: February 02, 2021, 10:30:42 AM »
I've just found that my Acurite 5n1 wind vane is broken again. I checked my notes, I installed the current one Dec 2019, so about 13 months of use.

Like the last time, the "tail fin" that takes most of the wind loading cracked off.

Replacements are only $5 USD, though minimum shipping is now close to $9. I didn't think far enough ahead to order more than 1.

Are other people finding the wind vane to be particularly brittle/fragile?  Have you replaced it more than once?

Never replaced a 5-in-1 mechanical part in 10 years.  Well, except for the one destroyed when a tree company smashed it during an "oopsie" in our back yard.....

I've never had one break. Maybe ice gets on it up north?

Thanks for the info. Ok, I'll chalk it up to a harsh environment, though I don't think it iced up.  During Monday's Nor'easter my 5n1 saw peaks around 45 mph. My neighbor's Davis which is much higher up recorded a peak of 68 mph.

The wind vane broke before this storm. Temperature was about 16F when I noticed it had broken a few days ago. We hadn't had much of any real snow or ice this winter until this past Monday's storm.

So far I've replaced the temperature/Humidity sensor board once. I had the older soldered in version. The original board didn't have good coating so one of the traces was on the board was eaten through.

I'm pretty sure the solar panels and/or the fan died a few years ago.

Harsh here too - maybe harsher  -30C and winds to 120 kph.  Still works fine.

Yes.  2 times on my old one at home.

once at my dads house.   But.... it was more the fault of the cows. Dumb things licked it and broke it and the anny.

We have 0% chance of cows here. Deer roam the streets but they can't get to the weather station.  Probably some combination of the winds, UV, and salt mist making it brittle.

At some point soon, I'll put an Atlas up. We'll see how that fares. The
