Ecowitt WH41 v WH43 PM2.5 AQM
« on: May 15, 2020, 04:20:21 AM »
Hi Folks, thought I would draw attention to the inclusion of a dedicated inside AQM PM2.5 sensor from Ecowitt
I had completely failed to notice this until yesterday and it came out of a conversation with Lucy.

So to be clear there is a outside/inside PM2.5 sensor called the WH41 which does 10 minutes samples
http://www.ecowitt.com/wifi_weather/83.html
This comes with a solar panel and rechargeable batteries (can also be charged via MicroUSB socket)
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

And now also a WH43 which is the same sensor but without the Solar panel which is intended for folks to keep indoors.
http://www.ecowitt.com/wifi_weather/123.html
The biggest subtle difference I can see is that it can be powered by USB permanently and then will have 1 minute sensor readings. If you opt for AA battery power it goes to the 10 minute readings we are familiar with for the WH41

Hope that this is helpful to someone!

Also of note, in the app the WH43 shows DC within the battery icon instead of how much battery it has remaining when you have it powered via USB.

I plan on adding an indoor PM2.5 sensor to my upcoming HP2551 and had the WH41 in mind. The WH43 isn't available on Amazon Canada and I'd rather but from there.

If I understand correctly, the WH41 would work fine indoors, but I'd need to recharge the batteries once in a while and would have a lower sample rate?

I wonder where they are going to fit the data to? The console screen is getting rather clogged up now - in fact, I cannot see a space for it unless they redesigned the UI?!

Never mind. I thought it was Co2/PM 10 sensor.  #-o

Although, my point does still stand.

On my WS 2000 , there is spot just under the "out" , that used to have a "in" below it, or to the right I forget  (That disappeared after a firmware revision). I think with that unit if you add the indoor sensor, that "in" will reappear. Its just the last read on the "out" as I'm sure it will be on the "in"

I only have the external PM2,5 so I don't know if the values cycle between the two (inside/outside) on the HP2550/WS2000 display.
I am sure someone who does have this combo can advise.

When the new PM2.5/10 and CO2 sensor arrives I expect it will be treated as a upgrade sensor, in that its data will automatically supersede the WH41 on the display
This is how similar sensors are handled after all.
I think that the PM10 and CO2 readings could be squeezed in the same line after PM2.5.

Can I have 2 WH41 connected at same time, i.e. 1 inside and 1 outside to my GW1000 and HP2553?

I already have 1 WH41 outside and would also like to see indoor air conditions, the WH43 (indoor model) is very hard to get here in Australia but WH41 easy to get on AmazonAU site.

I understand the differences in the 2 models.

Tks

I have the external model.  After about a year outside exposed to the elements, the solar cell starting falling. So I disconnected the attached solar cell and wired in an inexpensive and similar sized solar cell.  So now the sensor is protected under the porch roof and just the solar cell is exposed at a good angle to the sun.  It would be great if it were designed that way, with a detachable (and replaceable) solar cell.   - Phil

Well you have made me think!

The WH41 has a MicroUSB port on the base to allow for periodic recharging.
This just so happens to be the standard connector used for small Solar panels sold for outdoor security cams.
I have one for my Heimvision outdoor cam.
I see no reason why you could not connect an auxiliary solar panel to the WH41 via the USB port to keep it 'extra' charged or charged if the device was tucked away out of sunlight for its original solar panel.
An example of the solar panel is here...

The other thing folks could do is to replace the NiCd AA cells with better quality with higher capacity to elongate life.

I modified my WH41 for contiunuos power from my solar panel system (2 x 100W panels, one on other side of shed not shown in pictures) with an 80 amp hr battery and 40 amp MPPT Rover CC. Using a 10 ft USB cord, I drilled a small hole on the bottom of the WH41, I put a glob of silicone caulking to close the hole after feeding the USB cord, and plugged the unit to my solar controller output. The solar controller provides power for some landscaping and security lights and USB ports at night, where I have the WH41 plugged in.

I'm thinking to WH41 is more better suited for this mod than the WH43 because the USB port is at the bottom versus the side. The former is more easy to weatherproof.

How are you finding the WH41 sensor? Is it still only polling every 10 mins? Do you have any issues with accuracy when PM2.5 is below 15µg/m3?

Be aware though if you have it fully exposed to the weather that heavy rain can sometimes 'drown' the sensor when it ingests water.
When that happens you need to dry it out carefully!
Also you do need to occasionally clean out bugs and so on that make homes inside.

On the accuracy, unfortunately I have nothing to compare it to. You do get false or abnormal readings if subjected to high humidity, rain mist, fog and certain other environmental conditions. I believe this is mentioned in the manual.

I have not had good luck with the WH41, after working fine for several months, it suddenly started to register only between 11-13 ug/m3.  The replacement ecowitt sent me only now registers between 1-3 ug/m3.  The WH43 I have however has and still works pretty good.
