A lot of people would think that too. But trust me, that’s nothing compared to getting hit!

While active duty AF, I was escorting some contractors in a restricted area. It was late spring in Arkansas, about 3PM. . There were some storms off in the distance, but nothing close to worry about. Or so we thought. Me, and the other guy I was with were about 15 feet from a munitions building watching these contractors install some lights for the area. A bolt came down, hit the lightning suppression on the building where we were standing and dissipated into the ground. Just like it was meant to do. Unfortunately, that dissipation then hit our feet. Felt like a sledgehammer hit the bottom of our feet. Knocked both of us about 6 feet in the air. Decided right then the contractors were done for the day and we all went back inside.

I can't even imagine. I'm pretty sure all of us have had the 'flash/bang' simultaneously, and probably more than once, but have never experienced current, let alone causing back flips. Glad y'all decided to take it inside...while still breathing. Thank you for sharing!  =D>

Closest I ever came was a group of us on school trip like 75 ish. On the beach of North Shore of New Brunswick as storm rolled in. Split a 40 foot spruce and 1/3 of it fell to the ground. We were all standing just out of reach of the falling part by about 5 feet.

We never did feel anything. Just sounded like we were inside the breech of a cannon when it was lit. Everybody, guys and gals, screamed like horror flick damsels.

Ha, it just crossed my mind that your comment makes me think of my spectacular thundersnow encounters when living on the south shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio. Fortunately though, unlike you, my encounters were only visual and aural. 8-[

Fairfax County, VA early 70s, summer

Lightning hit the cover to our water well, metal cover, traveled into the house, blew open the fuse box door and melted some fuses. Wife had her feet on a footstool that was also a fan and it began to smoke.

The blacksmith was down at the barn shoeing horses and using an electric forge. Knocked her down and ended her enthusiasm for the day. Must have traveled through the water pipe from the house to barn.

Memorable. Expensive. Also loud....very loud. But it could have been so much worse.

Wow! The effects of a lighting strike can be truly amazing, much like what strong/violent tornadoes can do to flying debris, things you'd never think physically possible. What's even more amazing is that odds are these are merely "negative" strikes, not "positive" ones.

Yes! Spectacular lightning display! Do you know who made that image, when, and where?
