using a tablet as PWS display
« on: October 04, 2022, 10:50:08 AM »
Hi!

My Ambient Weather Falcon 8478 bit the dust after about four years. Maybe that is to be expected, I dunno, it's my first weather station, but I don't want to spend $300 each time if that's the norm.

I did like its display, however. Date and time were featured prominently which allowed it to serve as a clock on the wall as well.

I don't like any displays that I see out there. I'm leaning WS-2000, that display seems ok. The WS-2902c display looks a lot like my old one EXCEPT that stupid color film that they put on each section - it looks terrible! If it were only the numbers that would be fine but it's a lot of colored boxes.

Would be cool to get a $50 amazon tablet or something and install a weather app and have it always display that. Have people been doing that? Any pointers or apps to look at? I am sure there are a number of weather apps, but PWS apps maybe not so much. Thanks!

I have the Ecowitt app on my android phone, that takes its feed from my Ecowitt.net site.  On that basis an android tablet with internet connection would work loading the page directly, presumably apple would do the same?

I decided to make my own tablet template back in the Summer, so I could use a tablet to display my data in my porch, as it's somewhere I use regularly when I vape, or have a cup of coffee.

I bought a cheap-ish tablet, which came with a charging dock. I set Android to only charge to 60%, so it keeps the battery healthy even by being plugged in permanantly.

I downloaded an app called 'Kiosk' and paid for a license. It is a full browser, but you can do absolutely anything with it. I set it to full screen, and you can hide all status bars top & bottom. It'll also launch the app if the tablet reboots, and go directly to my tablet site.

Obviously, the site is hosted, but my Davis data updates every 5 seconds on it.

I've done a few small updates to it since.

Mapantz, thanks for the Kiosk rec. I have an old 1st generation iPad mini that I use to display the home page of my web site on a wall in my kitchen. Some apps won't load on it because the OS is old, but Kiosk did fine and now the display is missing the browser clutter. Perfect!
