WeatherFlow Tempest - Coupon discount 10% COMPARETTOIVAN
« on: July 22, 2021, 05:44:45 PM »
Hello to all users and visitors of the WXforum forum. I open this new thread to discuss with you about the Tempest weather station from the American company WeatherFlow. I received the station a few days ago and I am already creating the first comparison graphs with the stations I own, that is a gw1003, composed of the ecowitt WS80 station, the WH40 rain gauge and a WH32-EP sensor in Barani Pro sunscreen. installed a manual rain gauge to be sure of the readings of the devices.

I am attaching photos of the installation.

In this regard, I inform you that I have recently entered into a collaboration agreement with the company, thanks to which I will be able to obtain a 10% discount for any product purchasers valid for the purchase of each product in the catalog. In order to take advantage of the promotion, you will need to enter a discount code, on the order summary page, under "Coupon". The discount code will be sent only to interested parties, by this e-mail couponweatherflow@gmail.com, before the purchase. Do not hesitate to contact me for info on the purchase or even on anything else. TEMPEST STATION CANNOT BE PURCHASED IN EUROPE

As already said I started building the first graphs and these are the results:

to simplify things and avoid messages, perhaps it is better if I send the discount code directly. It is this: COMPARETTOIVAN

The only shrewdness and suggestion I give you is to copy it by reading the message in the original language avoiding corrections or modifications by the translator.

GRAPH 28-07-2021

GRAPH 1: today data gaps due to IFTTT problems, if you see in the tempest website there is no data gaps, we will solve these data problems when the meteotemplate is completed

GRAPH 6:

About IFTTT, I connected the station to IFTTT in order to create automatisms, such as the one that allows you to transcribe data every 1 minute on a google sheet up to a maximum of 2000 rows per sheet, which will be replaced by a new sheet when it exceeds 2000 lines. Furthermore there is the possibility to create a google sheet with all the data on lightning, etc.

I attach some screens

also, quite some people report that the so-called haptic rain sensor generates a lot of false positives.
Because it is sensitive to vibrations. It translates the vibration that a hitting raindrop causes into a rain measurement.
In principle an interesting idea.
However, e.g. Jets/airplanes flying over the mounting location but also other vibrations are interpreted as rain.

Did you do already some measurement regarding the haptic rain sensor ?
Or is the weather too sunny these day ?  8-)

I still can't say anything about the haptic rain sensor, very sunny days, very hot but no precipitation in the previous days and not even in the next few days. When it rains I will publish the results here.

I too had heard of these problems, but I think they were more present in the 1st version of the station, I think that with the Tempest sensor the situation has improved a little.

For the shipment to Italy from America I paid 90 € of customs duties, if you wait for the moment when they will sell it in Europe you will save these 90 € of duties, which are not few.  It shouldn't take long for availability in europe!

when the haptic rain sensor issue is sorted out, it could be an option - even though it's again a 7-in-1 array.
But I have helicopters and air planes with noticeable sound flying over my place - one of the reasons for the  false positive readings.
In one finding a fighter jet caused 32 mm of (non-existing) rain reading.

when the haptic rain sensor issue is sorted out, it could be an option - even though it's again a 7-in-1 array.
But I have helicopters and air planes with noticeable sound flying over my place - one of the reasons for the  false positive readings.
In one finding a fighter jet caused 32 mm of (non-existing) rain reading.

WeatherFlow's main office is located next to Daytona Beach International Airport and the Daytona International Speedway.  They used to have dozens of test stations on the roof, and I would check them out on race weekends and other times to see if they picked up any false rain.  There was no noticeable sound triggers that I ever noticed, from planes, 43 open-header NASCAR engines, 10,000+ Harleys in town for Bike Week, fireworks, etc.

My own Sky/Tempest stations are located under the final approach to an international airport, which hosts the NY Air Show every summer.  I only saw ONE false rain trigger, over several years and multiple practice days for the USAF Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, and RAF Red Arrows.  Not even a little "oopsie" sonic boom that rattled our neighborhood set off the rain sensor.

That being said, I still consider the haptic sensor to be questionable at times, and have a 4-inch Stratus manual gauge and several tippers for measuring rain.....

Thanks for the excellent info you gave, I certainly won't have the opportunity to test all this, every now and then some helicopters pass by but nothing more.

As you say, surely there will be improvement, but I believe that by now it will be the technology used to measure the rain in the future !!

@Gyvate. In my opinion there is also to consider how stable the pole in which the station is positioned is, that is, if it is not very stable it could also be the vibrations of the pole that affect the station to cause the false readings, I think.

For the speech of the station which is all in one, consider that other more professional brands have also adopted the all in one sensors, I refer to the Vaisala in detail.

Of course, and I agree with you on this, having separate sensors allows you to position the various sensors in the best position respecting the rules as much as possible, but with all-in-one groups you have to make choices, in my case I tried to position the rain gauge and the temperature sensor following the rules, but at the expense of the wind sensor.

how do you explain these break-ins of solar radiation of the Tempest when the WS80 doesn't show a break-in and later on vice versa ?
Is there a sun position at some time of the day where there is some obstacle (tower, tree) which throws a shadow on the sensor ?
And the shadow of the same obstacle hits the other sensor two hours later ?

I can easily answer that it is the pole behind the station (tempest) which causes that lowering of the radiation, which then affects the ws80 after a few minutes due to the rear pole.  So sw there were no poles there would be no such problems

Charts of 3-8-2021:

- TEMPERATURE OF THE BARANI PRO - TEMPEST TEMPERATURE:

- DIFFERENCE OF THE TEMPEST COMPARED TO THE BARANI PRO (strange the peak that is seen around 08:00 in the morning, by carefully observing the temperature graph you can see that between 7:55 and 8:20 the temperature dropped rapidly by about 3 ° C, so a probable different reactivity / behavior of the two screens caused that peak at the top):
