Embedded AS3935
« on: August 07, 2014, 08:42:34 PM »
Wanted to start a new thread on this board since the other topic is more of the this working with and being part of the Red system. So my question here will be: has anyone or is there a way to run this unit by itself say with a display, with some circuitry, has anyone experimented in making/using this as a standalone unit.  any and all ideas and help welcomed.  Thank you    :-)

Acu-Rite has a detector. I confirmed it via a quick tear-down that it has the AS3935.

AMS has a development kit with a display and a lightning simulator. Here it is at Mouser:

Here is SLOWeather's review: http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=19733.msg190871#msg190871

Finally, there is this Ventus weather station that has the AS3935 embedded.

If you just want a lightning detector that uses the AS3935, then the Acu-Rite is the clear choice. If you are looking at a project to embed it yourself, the development kit might be a good bet to start. (or at least to study). The Acu-Rite is cheap enough to be a good side-by-side reference if you are making your own.

Best of luck.

Hi Greg, I have 2 of them AccuRite ones now. The first one I got didn't seem to work for some reason and we had near by lightning, close enough that it should have picked it up. So, like others, figured it was a loss and tossed it in the pile of "Whatever". Pulled it out one day because of storms and was working like a charm. So I bought another one. And yes, I read that it contained that IC as well. I'm hoping to find others that wrote some software for it as a unit by itself since there are 3 types of these cpb units out here now, someone has had to have done their own software interface for it by now. I want to be able to run it as a single device with some software. I did come across the others you listed, but pricing is a bit high... thanks for the info !!  :)
