WU Nexrad Composite Radar Works
« on: May 09, 2021, 04:16:33 PM »
I have the WU Nexrad Radar working in Composite Reflectivity mode instead of the now dead Base Reflectivity mode. I just changed all of the Radblast URL's from: type=NOR to: type=NCR in WU-radar-inc.php and also in Settings.php ..... then it was up and running again. It also works on the top of my index.php page after changing the URL to type=NCR. I like Composite over Base anyway.... so Id say all is good, but with WU for how long?

Here's my working wxradar.php link: https://thedallesweather.com/wxradar.php?mode=3&animated=1&advisories=1&track=1&lightning=1

edit: I forgot to mention that WU (IBM) has the Composite Nexrad set to only update every 350 seconds! Go figure....

The radar map works also if you tilt the beam up. It only doesn't work on the .50 degree setting. I hope they don't remove the others now that we've blown the cover, but they probably will...

Composite will do for now.  Thanks!

Now to get them to fix it on their own radar pages.

That would depend on the mode of operation of the radar (i.e. CLEAR AIR mode, Precipitation Mode, and in some case when needed, SEVERE Wx mode, all update at different rates.

I hope they didn't just set a timer to 350 for all of them.... :(

The previous posts stated that WU/IBM is sending out the images every 350 seconds...

What i meant by the "timer" term is that i hope the programmers there didn't set some kind of batch send for all the radars for every 350 seconds even though they can update sooner depending on their operating mode.

Hope that helps...

I just tried Base 1.45 degrees and the others that work... it looks like they are all set on a 350 second update timer

Well that's a shame seeing the severe Wx/Precip mode updates every 4.5 minutes.......

Oh well, what's a man going to do.....

The severe weather layer on the map hasnt worked in about 9 or 10 months. Are you guys seeing something different?

I really haven't noticed that. But it wouldn't surprise me. Oh well...it is what it is.

FWIW, I believe the auto-refresh on the NEXRAD pages has always been ~350 seconds.  If you manually refresh it'll restart the displayed timer.  The underlying images are also 5-6 minutes apart but don't seem to have any relation to the remaining time shown.

No clue how you figured this out, but I was losing my mind seeing "Radar down for maintenance" for weeks. I tweaked my URL to the NCR version, and voila.

Many thanks!

So Base Reflectivity mode is 100% dead?  Has it ever been down this long before?

TWDR, which is still in the drop-down menus, has been down since December 2019.  Draw your own conclusions.

so, thanks to a nice forum member i ended up over here after posting that the nexrad radar has been down for me since 5-05.
i'm not a weather person and while i now can make the radar work by using the drop-down menu and choosing what's been recommended, i see no way of changing any url?
am i missing something or am i stuck with doing this manually until wu deems it's worth fixing.

Yeah....that's my bad. Changing the URL is for the Saratoga Website Templates radar displays (and maybe other Website Templates?). Sorry for the confusion.

If you change N0R to NCR in https ://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?num=40&type=NCR&mapx=400&mapy=240{...} you can save it as a direct link.

Thanks, Capeweather.  Like Chief-David, I was somewhat disappointed in the composite version, but changing NCR to N1R is an improvement.

N1R is BR at 1.45 tilt and even though it works, is smoother, and clutter can be removed I don't think you'll like the presentation during storms.  The BR 0.5 tilt is most representative of precipitation during a majority of storms.

We are stuck with CR due to the NWS deprecating the product and not the WU this time.  I figure the other BR tilts will be killed off but this is just speculation.  The "blocky" short range CR appearance is due to its lower spatial resolution on a 1.1 * 1.1 nm grid. It has one-half the resolution of the Base Reflectivity product.  I don't like all the clutter especially at night and no clutter=1 doesn't work in CR.

I just got this feedback from a retired MET: I think the CR feed will usually appear similar to the 0.5 BR feed, but will at times make rain appear heavier than it really is. Ground clutter suppression is more difficult in CR.  The CR looks at a wider slice of sky and is more likely to detect non-precipitation objects and phenomena that reflect radar energy back to the radar.  These could be high terrain, flocks of birds, swarms of insects, and airplanes.  Radar output users usually can tell the difference between precipitation and non-precipitation returns.  Nevertheless, radar clutter is annoying and might cause real precipitation to be harder to interpret.
