Greetings! New guy, here. The recent inconvenient changes happening with the NWS radar imagery left me searching for a replacement for the lite image, and my searches led me here. Finding that there isn't a lot of love for the new NWS radar, I thought I would share my alternative solution, using Bing maps. I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft, but a dev license is free, as long as you don't have a huge amount of traffic.
Here are the license details...
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/maps/licensingI was searching for an alternative site long before the NWS changes, and came across a tutorial from Microsoft on how to use their maps to display various data sets. They have an interactive code builder, using radar data as an example. As it turns out, it's not too bad. I'm not a programmer, and I was able to piece together what I wanted. The code builder produces Typescript, HTML, or JavaScript, which is what I used. Here is the result...
https://www.oh65wx.com/radar/Note that you can zoom in and out, or drag the map wherever you want. Map controls are top right, including an a aerial view. RADAR data age is top left, play/pause bottom left. The page and data reloads every 5 minutes. The data is from Iowa State University, but there are a bunch of other sources.
Here is the tutorial site. It's actually one several that I used, but this is where I started...
https://www.bing.com/api/maps/sdk/mapcontrol/isdk/weatherradarmap#JSPlease tell me what you think, because I have received zero feedback. Here is my weather site. The radar page is linked from the smaller radar image here...
https://www.oh65wx.com/I intend to make a small version for the front page to replace the image there, but I haven't gotten around to finishing it.
Cheers!
