Being that its a direct connection to the PC that's a tough one.
Just a suggestion but what about updating the drivers on your USB connection. I seem to remember a long time ago when I used to do that the drivers had to be updated regularly.
Also it may be a software issue. WL isn't exactly cutting edge technology. Maybe try one one of the other software programs like Cumulus or Weather Display and see if the issue continues.

You can look at the device manger, universal serial bus controllers, look for your USB port (I think it is 3) and double click on it and check the power management and uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device.

By losing connection,  do you mean the bulletin mode just closes ? Or do the charts just stop updating ?

Yes, the logger is needed.
For first time CumulusMX running with the station, after you start CumulusMX follow the instructions ro run the Config Wizzard.

For Station settings > Station Type > select Vantage Pro 2 >
Davis VP/VP2/Vue > Davis Connection Settings > Connection Type: Serial (unless you have the IPlogger) > Serial Port Name > enter your PC's Com port.

Enjoy,
Paul
