This is great information but I'm not sure that all the information pieces are there. I have figured it out though. Here is the complete solution in a nutshell.
How to upload image from Nest Cam to Weather Underground FTP Webcam:- Use this link to generate a stream link from your Nest public URL: https://www.ispyconnect.com/userguide-nest.aspx What this basically does is convert your public Nest URL into a media stream that can get opened with VLC
- Install VLC classic. If using Windows 10 do not install the version from the Microsoft Store. Recent versions of Windows 10 require that you change the permissions to allow you to install from other sources that are not the Microsoft Store.
- Configure the following settings in VLC to cause it to save a snapshot after every X number of video frames. This is done in the Advanced VLC menu under Tools / Preferences / All / Filters / Scene Filter and then changing some settings to essentially save to jpg format to the directory you choose and having it overwrite the same filename. The Scene Filter does have to be enabled after configuration by going back up one level to the Filters menu and selecting the check box for Scene Filter to be turned on.
- I recommend saving these settings and closing the program and opening it up again now
- Now back in VLC you go to the menu Media / Open Network Stream and paste the URL that was generated by the ispyconnect website and click play.
- Your video stream should be now visible and if you check the directory that you referenced when configuring the Scene Filter you should see the image.jpg file or whatever you called it....the default name in VLC is actually scene.jpg...doesn't matter what it is as long as its a jpg.
- The last step is to use an FTP program to capture that image.jpg file and upload it to WU at a given scheduled interval. There are numerous options here it doesn't matter which you use.
Summary:
basically what is happening is that the Nest stream is converted to a stream without all the other crap that the Nest website puts on your public video stream. You can now open the plain live video stream using VLC classic media player. With the correct settings in VLC you are able to schedule the creation of a consecutive snapshot file that is always being overwritten to jpg file format. Now you can use any FTP upload program to schedule an upload to Weather Underground's FTP servers.
There are several How To walk Through Documentation pages on the Internet if you need more detailed help with the VLC steps as those are the most complicated. Just search for: VLC Scene Filter snapshot
I don't have a Nest cam but I used the following public link I found to use as a test:
https://video.nest.com/live/SToINZLlNXThis is the sort of thing that is perfect for an extra computer or Raspberry Pi. You don't want to run this on your every day computer. To save system resources maybe set the the VLC frames to capture to JPG to something high. The default is like 50 frames capture...but that is too frequent for WU use. I don't know what the frame rate is of the Nest stream. But say it 30 frames per second then after 5 minutes then there would have elapsed 9,000 frames (30 frames/sec * 60 sec * 5 min = 9,000 frames). But test with a low number at first to make sure you are getting a JPG file and then after you have it all working then reduce system resources by increasing the VLC capture to something high like 9,000 or whatever makes sense. You only need to capture one frame every 5 minutes for WU is what I'm saying. You still need to FTP that JPG frame file with your FTP program every 5 minutes or greater....no less.
