I think if I were a Mac user I wouldn't want the mass of hacker switching over. It not that Mac never have security issues it just that they never fix them till the next OS update. Macintosh Security Site]http://www.securemac.com/]Macintosh Security Site

My old turn-of-the-century Dell desktop is still chugging along.  Maybe it's all this broadband stuff that wears these new computers out?   #-o

I think my hardware already runs faster than my internet
Our power fluctuates so wildly here I have more power supply and UPS troubles than anything!  Also I have found the smarter the UPS the less likely it is to
like generator power!   This morning I have restarted one of my weather machines Bout 10 times since 7 am!
And thats the one I need to replace the batteries on the UPS

Merry Christmas Greg!

There have been SEVERAL challenges to the hackers of the world to CRACK a Macintosh on the internet.  Serious CASH prizes have been offered.  Basically, a Macintosh is placed on the internet with no firewall or any protection of any kind, outside of OSX's built in security systems.  The hackers are given a set of easy goals. Something they could pull off a PC in less than 10 minutes. The machine is left up there for several weeks to several months.  To date, no one has won a penny.  ;)

Oh!  On that slot-car rig... VERY COOL!  \:D/

I was a BIG FAN of that hobby back in the 60s when I was around 10 years old.  We had two slot car tracks in our town and I was a member of both clubs.  I had about 3 cars managed to win a couple of minor trophies.  I still have them!  :D

I have never used any sort of Virus Software on any of my Linux boxes here either with no trouble.
But I keep things fairly tight as far as the gateway to the net is concerned.

All the hacker could pool their resources they could make Windows a much better OS  :-P

Your statement about not being able to be hacked is unfortunately false... :(

I could post over 100 more links to prove the point but the above speaks for itself.

Here is a list of at least 100+ virus's that have hit the MAC platform...  http://www.iantivirus.com/threats/

They also issue security updates : http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2009/12/security_updates_for_mac_os_x.html

Windows is FAR from perfect no doubt but the touted MAC is hardly immune.....That's the reality of it.

Those were all exploits of specific pieces of software, which permitted them to hack in through that flaw. (That Safari exploit was patched by the way)  I have still never heard of anyone who was successfully able to hack into a Mac that was just sitting there connected to the internet.  Contests with this configuration had no winners.

I dare anyone to put a PC up there with no firewall or virus protection running like I have been doing for the last 15 years.

As far as the virus mentioned.  None of them are technically in the "wild".  They may exist, but their impact on the Mac community has been basically zero.

What the fanboys of EVERY OS need to understand is that there is no perfect OS.  Each OS has its place in the world.

I'm a Linux person.  I have a Windows PC that the kids need to run all the various educational games out there.

Seeing as OSX is based on UNIX, I could make the argument that the security built into the Mac has nothing to do with the Mac, but it the UNIX security model,

ChrisH,  Remember that BootCamp will require actually booting to Windows and your Mac OS-X won't be available without rebooting (one or the other).  Give VMWare Fusion a try, it runs great and you can run a fully operational Windows 7 in only 1GB RAM.  It also allows you to switch between Win/OS-X just like switching between applications.  I ran it on my MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM with no problems whatsoever.  Not sure I'd want to use it for my weather stuff, but for a basic station it would be fine.

As far as Windows or OS-X being a better OS, there isn't an answer really.  Measuring by virus counts or users certainly doesn't mean much.  I have been intimately familiar Windows since 1982 and Macs for the last 5 or so years, and the fanboi levels on both sides are really annoying.  I recently sold my MacBook Pro and moved back to my Quad core Dell as my daily system, but still use my MacBook Air regularly, as well as my beloved iPhone.  Now that is a really nice device.

personally I think it would be nice if weathergoose did not keep dishing up the line, I have tried everything, I think the Mac and LWC is the best, and so everyone else should be using that

You're just mad that I went with LWC instead of YOUR software!    I don't care for a PORT of a Windows program that doesn't conform to the OSX standards for the UI.  LWC is a NATIVE OSX application, not a port from another OS.

As far as the Windows on Mac thing goes... I run my copy of XP using Paralleles which allows BOTH Windows and OSX to run at the same time sharing the machine's resources between them.  Since I only need access to a couple of Windows based things, I would never consider using bootcamp and not having access to OSX where 99.9% of the stuff I use is.  ;)

Goose, sorry I addressed my post to you, it was for ChrisH and his comment about Bootcamp.  I have edited it appropriately.
